Anatomy of a Neve 8038

Thought you guys might enjoy this... Lots of interior restoration pics from our 60-channel Neve 8038 restoration project. It's too big to post here, here's a link to a slide-show.

This has been one of our major projects in the last 6 months. Over 1 1/2 miles of new wire in this sucker, all re-capped, frame restored and reinforced, etc. We should be finished in March.

Thanks, man. Glad you like them. We're getting real close, I should have a new batch of pictures with the final product in the next couple weeks. If you guys are interested, I'll take some pictures of the installation as well. We should be putting this thing in in late March/early April depending on session schedule.

Really, this is just the tip of the iceberg (and one of the reasons I've been away from posting for a while)... We're building two new studios, one will be full 5.1 with a 101 channel SSL 9000J we just purchased from AEA and a smaller post/edit studio as well. It's going to be a crazy year, but a hell of a lot of fun.

Jay.

Wonderful to see you guys putting in such great analog desks. The 8038 and 8048 series are still just the 'bee's knees' in so many ways on the tracking end of things, IMHO.

The 9kJ is "monster-size" huh?

I wish I had one right now....

NOTHING will get that crazy 'rubberband' Eq. gtr sound(ala V. Wojno on Machine Head's "Burn my eyes") like the "J" in "E mode"... and that's EXACTLY what I'm missing in my room today!!!!

HOHOHO. Kill me.

A thousand best wishes to you and the whole crew over there.

Properly built, equipped, staffed, maintained and managed "Upper-Mid" rooms stand the BEST chance of not only 'survivability".... but "PROFITABILITY" with all the bedlam in the business now.

Having the best first 2 quarters we have ever had since we got into this is doing much to bolster this belief. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. LOL.

Thanks for the kind words, Slip. REALLY glad to hear things are going well for you on the other coast. I've been doing very poorly at keeping in touch.

I can't wait to hear the Neve.... Our BCM-10 is like butter, this thing is toast with a whole meal.

The SSL is a little large... 2nd largest in a commercial recording facility in the world, SSL tells me. It's actually a 114 channel frame. Lift with your legs, not with your back, etc.

Cello just gave up the ghost out here, I hear. Hit Factory out there, too. We're keeping the doors open and making some damn fine tracks upon occaision. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Great Job.

But it's all about this picture.

I still have dreams of going into some old widow's attic and seeing this picture.

... is that a specialist piece of De Walt restoration equipment under the bench? I knew Neve boards had a rep for being solidly built - but i didn't know one had to angle grind them to disassemble!!!!!

We had to strengthen parts of the frame to support our custom patchbay buckets.

Part of the upgrades:

- All channels have meter bridges
- Addition of EQ modules
- Recap of all modules
- Martinsound Aux return faders
- Power supplies rebuilt

33 1075s (modified 1066, essentially)
1 1066
2 1076s (modified 1073, essentially)
10 1073s
8 1082s
2 2074s
4 2073s
Comps (4) are 2254as (outboard racked)

We have about 15 more 1066 and 1073 modules kicking around as well as some Brent Averill repros and a couple Wunder Audio modules. I may switch some around, depending on how things shake out for the gear placement for the new room.

Hi

Great project, but what makes you think it's an 8038?

I couldn't see any 1948's in that pile of modules...

I think you have a big ol' custom console.

What's the A number?

where/is there a master section. i see a few slots open in the row of 10** modules

i assume you would use this primarily (only) for tracking.

i would love to track on that.

when will it be installed. i think i might have a gig in LA tracking sometime in June....

I don't think it's an 8038, but I did refer to it as such... a matter of convenience. It's definitely a custom job. Did they make a 80XX in a 60-channel form factor? I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

Are the A numbers generally found on the voltage input panel? Ours has been replaced, probably due to the fact it was made for about 1/3 of the modules it currently houses. There are no numbers on the board. We purchased it from Castle Oaks' Room B if that helps. I'll do some more research and see if I can't find out.

Hi

No, Neve never made anything that big. It has to be several similar consoles joined together.

The modules look old, and, unless I'm mistaken, look like 1903's.

So where are the Aux modules? What number were they?

What do you use for a monitor/mixdown system?

I wish there was a front view of the whole console... I might recognise it!

The master section is on the far left, underneath the patchbays. It's custom.

I don't see why you couldn't use it for mix, although tracking is where it's going to shine. We have plenty of other gear to round out the palette.

Installation will be early/mid April. June won't be a problem.

Here's a pic of the monitor section:

Not having the board in front of me, I'd have to get back to you on some of this stuff. I'm actually heading out for a quick visit this weekend to check on the progress... I'll e-mail you, if there are any questions you want answered, I'd be happy to try to get answers for you.

Hi

It's two 8028's joined together, I believe.

The modules at the front are 1906's that have had the original Isostat "cut" switch and Secme "solo" switch replaced with illuminated buttons.

AIR recording also bought custom consoles fitted with these modules, but the meter section is completely different with 2254's on the left hand meter region.

Yup, them there's a '28

You're doing a great job!

Hey Geoff & Jason, I see the number A827 on one of the pics. Could that be the serial number you were asking for?

Hi

I don't have much info on pre A1000 numbers (other than what's stored in my head!) but low A800 numbered consoles were built around the end of 1972... which fits in nicely with the 8028 theory.

PS I notice that both the original 1903 and 1906 modules have been modified/enhanced from their original form. The 1903's at the top (if that's what they were) have lost the pan switch and lamp and there's a 2T assign now. This negates the need for a separate monitor matrix system. as fitted to original 8028's and 38's.

What a monster. I am really surprised and amazed by people ready to conquer such giant.
By the way, I was dissapointed when heard new mixes done on one very big, old desk (don't remember which one) in terms of clarity and transparency. Yes it was warm, indeed.
