Best near field monitors for mixing hip-hop at about 2.5 feet from your ears?

I've got a pair of Genelec 1031's at my work and I'm absolutely struggling to get any low end response from them. They sit about 2.5 feet from my head. Granted my room is a little oddly shaped, but I have to move back a couple more feet to feel the subs, and the room is small so i can't really push the Gene's back any farther than they are. My home setup is similar too. i mix on old school Event PS 8's and i know they are totally budget monitors, but i can totally feel the subs and the punch, and the frequency response seems a little bit more even distributed all around, whereas the Genelecs feel kinda high in the hi-mids and no subs whatsoever. A lot of people said that when using the genelecs it's a good idea to use them with their subwoofer. Are they simply just too close to my face? would the smaller 5 inch genelecs w/ sub be more for me? I mean I know the 1031's have to be good. So many people could not possibly be wrong about them. Are they just too close to my face? Could anyone recommend any other hi-end monitors that could sit 2.5 feet away from you and still produce good results? Hip-hop is mainly the stuff I'm doing if that helps.
