ADR Compex F760X-RS

Just got a mint condition Compex but no manual. Anybody got one scanned or know a source for the manual?

Thought about putting it on the drumbus. How are you guys using it?

Thanks,

JJP uses it on a side buss for his Kick and Snare -- it also works well to compress drum rooms.. or on a side buss on the drum kit to be mixed in with the main kit.

You can find the schematics and alignment instructions here...

STUFF

I have not managed to scan the operating instructions as yet.

Cheers
Tim.

You definately need the manual to use it, because it has a really unusual setup procedure whereby the peak limiter must be set up first, and then the compressor is then referenced to this. Have a look at the section entitled "Establishing the unit in the channel".

I scanned all the schematics and service notes and some of the owners manual for the Vocal stresser, and the schematics for the ADR Easy Rider a while back, and they are over on the Group DIY site.

Tricky to set up ... really?

The peak lim is a simple affair driven by the big input gain pot. It's a bit fierce and obvious. If recording to analogue why not let the tape just soak it up? Personally, I find most Compex units get a bit noisy when the input gain gets beyond the three 'o clock mark.

Most engineers I know like the Compex because of the slow attack it's possible to dial in on high ratio settings. I've put a lot of mixes through it, back in the day.

I used it as my main stereo compressor for years on almost everything until the Daking compressor came along (with the same attack and release settings I used in the compex but a better sounding line amp).

I also don't think it's at all hard to "set up" or use.
Just use your ears.

I only ever used it (as a stereo buss compressor) on its FASTEST attack setting and the auto release.

I never use the peak limiter at all, because i always found it clicked... way too agressive.

but the rest of it is totally intuitive.

It's still the world's best piano compressor.
