Thread Starter | MIC SUGGESTIONS? mic with a particular sound.. OR MOD a u87
I'm looking for a mic that is sonically very similar to a U87, BUT with a nicer, more sizzly top end, and a bit more vintage sounding bottom, WITHOUT losing the thickness of the low mids, or being harsh on the high mids. The thickness of the low mids and how an 87 just "fits" in a mix without overpowering the highs is what I really love about it. I've tried just EQing and I'm not getting the results I'm looking for. Which mics (regardless of price) would fit in this category? Or, in the alternative, modifications that can be done to an 87 to get what I'm looking for?

What is a "vintage sounding bottom"? To me that could be grandpa farting. Jim Williams Audio Upgrades |

HAHAHA! ok Jim, I gotcha... I guess what I'm trying to describe is the "sizzle" and non linearity caused by a butt load of upper and lower harmonics. I seems that is what my U87ai is missing. Am I describing this properly? |

Very well. That was mostly caused by capsule underloading, typical values for old tube mics was 200 meg ohms. That causes non-linearity in the low frequencies aka distortion. Modern mics use 1 gig ohms typically. I suppose you could play around with underloading the capsule, just buy a few resistors and see. Jim Williams Audio Upgrades |

Hmmm interesting. I'm no electrical engineer, but I'll try to find some schematics and see what I can do. Thanks for the direction |
