I've cursed modern re-mastering before, but now I put my foot.....

...in my mouth.

I've complained on other forums about AC/DC's re-mastering by Sterling Sound.

Well, I broke down and replaced my CDs with the new stuff, and I am very happy.

My complaints stemmed from my listening to the radio.

ZZ Top's "La Grange" even sounds completely wrong, the drums, that is, (reverb) but now I can see that is a result of radio. Thank goodness!

That's what most people are doing. Calling and complaining could lead to reviving an interest in something other than sexy videos.

I've been thinking of getting one of the sattelite radio services...I don't know if the audio is going to be any good, and I haven't found a way to audition the sound on a good setup. Anyone experienced good sound from sattelite radio?

BTW, I got four of the AC/DC 180gram remastered LP's and they sound N¥I¥C¥E!

I've heard satellite radio, and it sounded great. Might as well have been listening to a CD.

Yeah I heard that La Grange on the radio too. Didn't think much of it until I heard a Foreigner song, a Yes song, and a Kansas song, all drenched in the same cheap reverb. So radio is adding reverb to the music now? Sh*t, that industry is imploding like the deathstar. With all due respect Bob, what good would calling to complain do? Most of their audience probably can't hear the difference (or at least they don't think they do).

The numbers show that music radio's audience is shrinking. Believe me, they listen and carefully.

Program directors love to tweak the processing so you can at least hear something as far away from the transmitter as possible. Giving them the message that they are going too far and turning listeners off is exactly the wake up call they need. The classic answer to the station's engineer and other station employees, who I can assure you are cringing just as much as you are, is "nobody's complaining."

I have a question for you big dogs: why do I only hear reverb on the drums on these songs mentioned? The rest of the tracks seem to be normal, but I hear horrible reverb on just the drums. Another example is AC/DC's "Ride on". The drums have ridiculous reverb on them, but nothing else. Do the radio stations have some other version?
Boston's first album typically gets mangled, too.

the broadcast limiters chop off the transient peaks to raise the RMS (average decibel level). when this happens it essentially raises the perceived volume of the ambient drum room and drum reverbs native to the actual mix. imagine if you took a drum subgroup and soloed it without any compression on the tracks but mixed it pretty well. if you strap a compressor and limiter over the top of the subgroup and crush the hell out of it - your room mics are really gonna start coming to life because everything else is getting reduced in volume for the duration of their transient peaks.

cheers,

i know a radio guy ... last i knew, they dont care. they live in their own little world of advertisers, new music posturing and worrying about dj image/ego

even if the few people who are still listening and care enough to call DO call, they'll tweak it MAYBE half way. and next month off they go again... it's a power game for them to 'control' music after all. they dont create it and they dont represent it, but they do control it's delivery, in their minds

what they DO care about it the eq curve and limiting for each part of the day ... they can tweak it remotely so that all music suffers the same fate, at their will.

they 'play' the radio

as such it's hopeless IMO. anyone use and like Sirius or XM ?

no sexy videos anymore !!! ???

how can i then decide which cd i have to buy? until now it was easy: start mtv, the first video with titts i see i buy. indeed it doesn't need 5 seconds

titts = buy the cd, no titts = have to listen to the music, then decide which one i like more
