Some pix from this week's rock tracking session at Capitol

Drums, bass, 2 guitars and keys tracked live in the studio.

Name of band and engineer to be kept secret at this time...

one teaser : this month's guest mod, Richard Dodd, once assisted the engineer...

best - jon

Re Pix upload - the forum engine can get 'grumpy' when uploading a lot of pictures (dunno why?). Best to do them in batches or 3 or so...

U47fet and 421 or Beta52 in the kick...but the setup has been changing completely every song...some songs had only 3 mics on the drums, most many more...

The bass has been alternating between a big Ampeg stack+DI, a tiny Hartke combo+DI and DI only+stomp boxes.

Guitars have been all sorts of amps and axes and miking situations.

The sound of the room is a big part of the sound of these sessions...there is a v cool Who "Live at Leeds" vibe going...the engineer is really bringing out the room in a way I don't see very often. He speaks of Andy Johns as one of his mentors. I can't really show any close-up miking pix, particularly of the lead guitar world (which I haven't shown any photos of at all) or give too many details, but it's been very interesting. The two assistant engineers on the sessions, Ludo Mullor and Laurent Bichara, have really enjoyed it.

B3 and percussions....the hammond was overdubbed in this case, not live.

The usual outboard plus a couple of EQP1As and Dolby 361 units.

A whole bunch of inputs to the SSL... mults, etc., but mixed down to less than 24 tracks.

That's it for now. I have to say, I do like the vibe the B3 brings to the session...

Appears to be a classic rock setup. From the looks of the studio it shouldn't be Too Hard To Handle.
Watts up with the drums...are they Gretsch?
Looks great! Not meaning to be Petty but I'm Jealous Again!!

Dude, when the guys said they were gonna be ping-ponging their tracks, they didn't mean....

Seriously, Jon, nice pics!

Do you think you could run down the kit mics? I'd be grateful!

Jon,
The trusty Roland SRV 2000 in the lower left hand side of the rack! Nice inexpensive piece. I ordered mine back in the 80's. Sold it a year ago when I purchased another Pro Tools system. I miss the little guy.
I see some of the Lexicon single rack verbs but what are you using for the main reverb?

not_so_new
I believe you're correct. They appear to be GMS drums.

House drums or the bands?

Bonjour Jon,

Nice studio, monsieur. Beautiful-looking live area, Neve, Chandler, Manley, dual Pultecs, very nice indeed.

One question ... what are the pair of Dolby 'A' racks (on top of the Pultecs) doing? Is the engineer tracking something through them? I've used a pair on mixdowns on a send for backing vocal 'air' EQ, but never in a tracking session ...

Yes, the drum kit is GMS.

The Roland echo unit is an SDE3000...

The Dolby 361 units are being used for tracking vocals. I reckon they are seeing a vox mult that is then mixed in with the straight vox and other stuff down to one track.

Today a Yamaha SP80 piano was rented in....it's been a long time since I've played one...a great pop/rock sound....reminds me of the piano on U2's "New Year's Day"...these things are getting hard to find around here.

Whoops! my bad. They look so much alike. I couldn't distringuish from the jpeg.
Nice room Jon. Is this studio A or B?

BTW What is the difference between the Yamaha sp80 and cp80 or cp70?
