Thread Starter | Analog Tape Survey
As most of have probably heard, Quantegy has filed for Chapter 11 proceedings. Michael Spitz (of ATR service) has been working on a new tape formulation for some time knowing the market for professional analog tape can no longer support a large facility and corporate structure like Quantegy or Emtec.
ATR Services is conducting an important market survey about your analog tape purchasing and would appreciate it if you could take the time to answer a few questions that will help us better gauge upcoming plans.
1. Are you currently using new professional analog tape?
2. Approximately how much of your budget is spent yearly on tape? $
3. What tape widths do you currently use? (2”, 1”, ½,” ¼ ”)
4. Do you prefer to use high output tape (SM900, GP9), medium output tape (911, 456) or a mix of both?
5. If ATR Services were to invest in a new tape line, would you support this effort by purchasing our tape? This question assumes that the tape is of equal or greater quality than what is currently available.
6. Do you currently buy factory direct or use a distributor?
7. Where are you located?

Maybe it's just the crowd I run in but nobody's using tape anymore, even my friends with big studios and 2" machines. Protools all the way.

$3K give/take
3. What tape widths do you currently use? (2”, 1”, ½,” ¼ ”)
2", 1/2" and occasionally 1" for mixdown where the budget allows. (I do not own a 1" mixdown machine but I have used it in other high-end studios and mastering at The Lodge.)
4. Do you prefer to use high output tape (SM900, GP9), medium output tape (911, 456) or a mix of both?
SM900

The idea of a Mike Spitz-designed tape formulation makes me so happy that I'm giddy. All I can say is BASF 900 has some kind of special mojo that I've never understood and I miss it. Please study it and emulate its properties if at all possible.
6. Do you currently buy factory direct or use a distributor?
Distributor. But factory direct is probably the way to go.

I currently use GP9, but not religiously. So. whatever sounds fine...

I wouldn't like to realign my entire tape machine every other day, so I would only use a new kind of tape if it is compatible with what's on the market. I don't think there's a need for better tape - tape nowadays is good enough as it is.

YES.
$5,000 TO $10,000.
2" mostly and some 1/2". Would like to use 2 track 1" at some point if tape stock were reliably available in the future.
GP9 and SM900 only.
HELL YES we would....but to give your tape a chance to be included in future record production budgets it would be important to keep the price at or even under previous levels.
Both. I prefer direct.
Paris, France.
THANK YOU Fletcher and Mike.
