But do they really want the Lexicon sound, or are they just being pc? Plenty of other (great) flavors out there.

I really dig the Lex300 for most vocals.....Add an echoboy and you have a good chain.
The echobiy is really versatile and has many emulations of the old delays.

For others stuff like drums, BV, keys etc. smaller boxes like the M3000 or the PCM 80/81 are good to mess with.

I agree with Thrill regarding the use of two PCM70's for that big lush sound. One unit just does not cut it. Ditto reg the PCM91.

Was once a big fan of eventide's till I heard the Lex :-)

Would really be interested in a thread about breakdown of comercially released songs regarding efx chain used on them say on vocals or drums??? Do eng's "ride" the send of a reverb of a vocal track?

What about using a reverb on the whole mix to glue the performance??
What settings work for say a rock song vs a ballad vs a pop song?

Read Some fav reviews of Altiverb5. Any users????

BTW...am still looking for the version upgrade chip and a LARC for my L300?
Any pointers/sellers????

The 90 isn't dual engine unless you're using the Dual Reverb card which I have but never really liked. I still like my KSP much better.

The Rumour is ok, I suppose, but really I much prefer the wooden hall algorithm in the KEL 95.

While i fully agree about the Lexicon sound being in its own category, if you're on a budget I think a Rumor (nice digital verb) + Altiverb (great natural spaces) is a great way to go.

back to the question...

I think plates and springs are great for vocals, guitars and keys; rooms are great for drums and strings. Also I tend to use two 'verbs on most sources - you can get a smoother tail by combining 2 different yet complimentary 'verbs. But that's a crapload of plugs, so it's sure nice to have the real gear.

When we can't afford to record in a hall, and the room ain't got enough echo, I turn up the plate!
