NHT M-00 monitors

Has anyone here used or even heard the NHT M-00 monitors? They seem interesting to me and are very affordable.

Yes. I'm listening to them right now, along with the S-00 sub woofer. I really like them.

i love 'em. Great detail to them. I've mixed a few records on them. Even had a case made so i can cart them around!

Cheers,
John

Is the sub essential? I've never been a fan of subs, but I've never used them in a professional setting either.

I never used them either until I got these. I don't know. They've become essential for me using them. Maybe I should try it without. I too have mixed several CDs with them. I was in a studio a few years ago where 5 monitors were up. Kind of crucial because the room sucked. I was doing a couple of CDs. Mixing was great in that I just went between all 5: Genelec 1031a, KRK (?), NS-10s, Auratone and these NHTs. Getting the mixes right on all of them. I kept coming back to these until I settled on them. So I bought them. I thought they sounded better and gave me a truer picture than any of the others. And they're great because they're small enough to take with you. But they're heavy. YMMV.

I had them for several months before I got the sub woofer. I have never been a fan of subs either, but I am very glad I picked up the S-00. It helped the imaging in the M-00's a bit, and it definitely extends the bottom I now travel with the sub as well, and it has come in very handy...

John

Thanks guys! I may get a pair in January. Then follow with the sub if I think I need it.

What were you using before the NHT?

I have a pair and never knew what the model was until now

Hey John, they sound better now with your custom dampeners.

I use the NHT Pro A-10 monitors and also have 2 sets of Super Zeros and a pair of Super Ones at the house. They're all great speakers!

I haven't listened to the M-00. I do like the A-20 (a lot like the passive 1.5). I have a pair of M-10s from them. NHT does good work (best value for your money I have ever seen).

I do know a guy or two that did design work there (and some still do). The value stuff that they make has china-made drivers. They have taken their time to set up good QA, but still manage to save on manufactuing costs over using the europe-made dirvers. So, you save money.

If you have $5500 sitting around, you might look for a set of these:

http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_nht_xd_series/

I'm gonna try and drop by at the end of the year for a listen myself....

Hey Rick--

Which dampeners are you talking about? I can't remember...

Hey tINY --

glad to see we both like the A20, after our discussions about another speaker! They have been my main monitor in the studio for the last few years.

Cheers,
john

Oh, you mean those precision rolled cloth speaker elevators? Those were a bonus that came with the two ZVex pedals that I bought a while ago...

I've been working for 4 months now in a studio with a pair of A-20 nears and i'm very happy with them. I think they're one of the best on their price tag range, havent heard the M's but if they have something from the A-20, they must be nice.

Hey john,

I never did like the NS10 much, but, standard is standard (like the SM58 for vocals on stage - yech!).

Did you check out the articles on the Xd? I think it will will mark the begining of a new era of monitor loudspeaker design (at least with the crossovers and amplifiers). The reports I've got from guys I trust (good ears and shoot from the hip) indicate it is a huge step forward.

Back on topic: Drumsound, You may want to check out the V6 series 2 and the Rockit line from KRK if you like the NHT monitors. They have similar properties. (This may be becasue the former D of E for NHT is now at CV-KRK...).

Hey tINY,

NHT had a working pair at AES, and they do indeed look impressive. It is hard to judge sound quality at those things, but as you mentioned, the application of technology is pretty impressive. The crossover slopes alone are incredible!

John

tINY,

I recently heard the KRK V6 and V8 at Guitarget and they sounded kind of interesting.

I'm hopefully going to have a few sets of monitors here sometime in January. I'm thinking of the M-00, Truth Audio TA-1P and maybe the V6. I know Truth Audio has a 15-trial, and Guitarget has a 30-day return policy, I need to find out about NHT's policy.

Check the links in my first post to this thread. The Xd is, basically, a powered speaker system. The big deal is the DSP based crossover with time and frequency domain correction. Basically, the DSP creates a filter that puts the drivers in phase and then implements a 100dB/octave crossover. The result is no multi-path transition-band effects and the transients are nearly perfectly coherent.

Read your review and just to give another viewpoint, I had both the Truths and the M-00s and had kind of the opposite response. I really couldn't work with the Truths at all. I found them extremely tubby and dark. I know a lot of people like them so this is strictly IMHO...

The NHTs on the other hand are working great for me as an alternate monitor. I'm quite pleased with them.

I do think the M-00 are cool. I'd love them as my alternative monitors. I just couldn't buy two sets of monitors at the time. I agree too that the Truths are on the darker side, something I'm noticing more as I use them.

I've mixed 54 songs for a Best of Live DVD project on a pair of M-00's and a S-00 since the beginning of July. Even had a set rented in for the end of the project which i had to finish in the UK.

I love 'em !!!!

Well you guys just spent my money!

Now, I know the sub really completes the package. But, how have people found mixing JUST on the M-00's? Do they have enough extension on their own to give you at least a semi-useful idea of what's going on in the kick/bass range?

this is what I wrote a few years ago in this same thread. It's not just the low end extension. by not having those low frequencies even getting to the M-00, the imaging is better and the lower mids are a bit more cleared out.
