the ultimate neve sidecar question

i would really like a desk!
i ahve a sweet HD3 rig with 2 192's
hardwired to a bunch of the usual outboard
LA2As ,1176s etc
but every once in a while i like to run a few things
up a channel or two , never more than 8
i know there were some old neve desks
that get used as side cars , are there any 8/12 channels that use 1073 eqs or something similar?
can any one reccomend something?
thanks and i hope this makes sense!

There is a 10 channel one that can fit all "10 series" modules [like the 1066, 1073, 1084] called a BCM-10... I hope you have a spare $30-40,000 sitting around... though I would probably recommend you score some better converters than the Shiti-Design crap if you'd really like to get all you can get from something like a BCM-10... but that's just me.

You might want to think about one of the Chandler "Mini-TG mixers" that should be out in a couple weeks... they may not have the cache of the "N word"... but they seem like they'll do a similar kinda thing for your audio... but whadda I know, I ain't heard one yet.

I was drooling over this one on ebay and was the 2nd highest bidder

Has anyone seen these before or is it a one-off?

The Melbourne has the 3114/3115 or 33114/33115 EQs/preamps. These sound great and are very useful. Doesn´t sound exactly like the 10xx though.

Hi

I couldn't open your link because it's in editpost mode...

That console was a one-off built around 1970. Neve made several even smaller consoles called Meldreth (the neighbouring village to Melbourn..... note.... no extra "E").

I think all Neve EQ's are good... they're just different!

There's loads of photos on my site in the Neve section.

Hi

That console is a PSM ... as in Portable Sub Mixer

They made that console in several different formats/modules including one where the gain switch rotated three times with LED's that gave the gain range of the rotation.

I think that the Neve print room finished up with about 20 different circuits for the PSM.

They are fairly rare as later, more unified, consoles like the Kelso and 54 models replaced them.

what i need is a small desk about 8 -12
channels , what neve would YOU
make/ choose to complement a protools
rig , mainly they would just be used as
inserts , is this what would be called a side car?

Hi

It depends on your budget...

Below $10,000 you ought to be able to pick up one of the 54** family that ranged from the 5422/32/42 8 channels 2 main O/P (plus 2 Auxes) to 5465 16 channel 4-2-1 main outs and two auxes. The last one may creep over $10,000 and nearer $15,000.

In that same price range you may pick up an 8301 Kelso, that's a 10 into 2 but very basic facilities... 2 band EQ, no phase or eq switches, etc.

Below $20,000 you ought to be able to pick up a 12 channel 5302 or 5312 Melbourn or a 16 channel 5306 (which is just a stretched 8301 Kelso).

After that the price of the console depends on the modules in it. For instance, the facilities on the BCM10 are fairly basic but with 10 x 1073 style EQ's and a bundle of 1272's, you will pay at least $30,000 just for the sale worth of the modules.

There are loads of other small Neve consoles that were made as dedicated broadcast consoles (like the 5301, 5402, 5322) but mix to a stereo output so would work as a mix down tool.

Pictures here....

And, of course, I'll sneak in a sales weasel plug for the GTM822 that (except for no mic pres.. it's a line mixer) provides more mon/meter facilities than any of those small Neves and sounds scarily like a big custom Neve. Sort of a vintage Neve (tm) in a box! Price somewhere around $6K, less for the add-on that enables 16 into 4, 24 into 4, etc., options, and a remote fader pack is an option.
