1073 vs 1081

Hi guys,

Looking for a new pre to replace my curtis opre2.
I keep getting mixed responses, I've recorded with the re-issue 1081 and a sony 800G and it sounded great (very 'pop').
I use 414 and C12 usually into ADA-8 and then PT .
which one? or is there a better option?

cheers

mac

The 1081 was always one of my favorite matches for the C800G.

Along with an API or Martech mic pre.

I've never liked the 1073 when tracking vocals, but i do like them at times when mixing them.

I can think of 20 or so things that will work more than fine... maybe your plan of attack might be to try out a few different units and try to determine which might be the best for your sense of aesthetic. Unlike 'thethrillfactor' I love 1073 pre's, especially with an 800G [I found the 800G a bit sterile and felt that the 1073 brought out what little lustre was available from the mic]... so obviously we're looking at this from a different aesthetic perspective... and ya know what? I'll bet you don't have the same sense of aesthetic that me or 'thrill' nor anyone else on this board might have.

In a pure battle of 73 v. 81... the 81 is a little snappier... seems to have a bit more odd order harmonic content to the texture, the 73 a little rounder... more of an even order harmonic kind of vibe. They're both great, just different.

Best of luck with the search.

I think I'll just get them on loan and see which one I'd like.

Thanks

1073 = class A
1081 = Class A/B

The 1073 on the other hand is my micpre/eq of choice.
Its all dependent on the microphone,music style and singer.

For pop/r&b(what i track the most), the 1073 to my ears are always too colored(especially paired up with the older tube microphones).

My philosophy is to hear as much of the singer,mic and song as much as possible.

When i hear something getting in the way(be it the character of a preamp or compressor) it bugs me to no end.

Especially since later on down the line i will be have to EQ this character out.

I prefer to use the "1073" sound when mixing anyway as an effect.

I hear ya Thrill, but I do think that a 1073 can sound great for rap vocals.It offers a bigness and smooths out the proximity effect that you're getting as these guys immediately push the pop screen all the way up to the grille and start rapping point blank. A Martech, though might be an even better ticket, just using Neve flavors here. Maybe someone else will chime in who has more experience in that field than I.

I could imagine that sounding pop. I was never able to get a demo of a c800g, so went down other routes. I could imagine it being more of a neutral sound as Fletcher says. For an alternative to a 1073, try a Fletcher pre amp, the Joe Meek green Fletcher, particularly the tube channel. This one is rounded and gets the neve sound with a bit of valve and tape characteristic thrown in. Try it before you mock it or buy it.
