mix compressor.
To get this sort of "glue" that the tube is giving...
and I only have solid state compressor...
I love the 33609 on the mix.

I ve heard the ear ,sounds good to me ,but a bit expensive and not stereo....

Tubes have nothing to do with "glue".

The most popular "glue" compressor these days is the mixbuss comp on the older SSL's.

And its not a design with tubes.

For the mixbuss probably the Pendulumn or the Manley Vari-mu.

For some individual channels the Inward Connections TSL1(Vac Rac limiter).

I have known some who have strapped 2 Tubetech CL1B's on the mixbuss with good results.

Again these all sound different even through they have tubes in them.

I understand what you mean...

I used tomix on a 4000E then a 4000G
I did many many records on them...
I use sometimes a 9000j or K.
But in my room I switched to a VR60.
the ssl 384 or alan smart "squeeze" the sound a bit too much...
I am looking for a nice "tubey" kind of sound.
thanks a lot for you advice...
Did you have a chance to ear the Greg Hanks BA660 ?
Info as well....I am not really into the tubetech brand.
Maybe you can help me a bit better with those info ?

Tubes can glue big time.

Try the Thermionic Phoenix compressor......

.....fatter than a gospel singer with a thyroid problem.

If its squeezing it too much, than you are probably hitting it too hard.

The secret to 384 or any mixbuss comp is the threshold.

On the SSL buss comp i start wit the highest setting and than back down unitl i hear a change(or the needle moves)once that happens i stop and work the busses.

The BA660 sounds big and ballsy.

I've never used a pair(or seen one) so i have no idea what it sounds like on the mixbuss.

I used it on a vocal and bass and liked what i heard.

What really makes the glue is the mixing engineer.

Tubes or solid state, they both can work.

I much prefer a maintaned analog machine to mix down to than a fancy mixbuss comp anytime(which is highly overated).

I will just answer your question like you probably want. I think tubes are GREAT.. go for it !!

SO, IMO ---

You want a "Manley Slam"..

Sounds like it fits your bill of wants (from what you described) to a tee.

(IMO)

3 words;
innerTUBE audio's Atomic Squeezebox.
Ok thats 4.

innerTUBE audio website

Excerpt of Mix magazines review of the San Fransisco AES:

Throughout the show, attendees kept returning with their friends, saying, "You just gotta hear InnerTUBE Audio's Atomic Squeeze Box Dual," a stereo/dual-mono version of the original Atomic Squeeze Box. This tube-based unit is designed to control an audio signal's amplitude while avoiding the sonic artifacts of traditional compressors and limiters, with the net effect of the ASB acting like a skilled assistant riding the faders.
