The Great Gearslutz Sample Swapmeet

The Great Gearslutz Sample Swapmeet...
cheezy enough?

Some friends have decided to try and do some online sample swappage.

November 8th, 2004 Monday... GMT/Zula Time 20:00:00... in the Gearslutz.com chatroom

That means:
Monday
Honolulu : 10 am
Anchorage : 11 am
Honolulu : 10 am
Los Angeles, Vancouver : Noon
Denver : 1 pm
Chicago, Houstin, Mexico City : 2 pm
New York, Detriot, Toronto : 3 pm
Rio De Janeiro : 6pm
London, Lisban : 8 pm
Paris, Brussels, Madrid, Prague, Rome, Stockholm, : 9 pm
Bucharest : 10 pm
Moscow : 11 pm
Toronto : 3 pm

Tuesday
Hong Kong : 2 am
Tokyo : 5 am
Sydney : 7 am

You have to be registered here to enter the chatroom. Please come with some of YOUR best samples. Samples cd's are pretty shitty, boring, and there are legal issues so don't bother showing up if you plan on swapping "Bob Clearmountain" samples. I'm sure people with be trading all day but noon pst is the set time.

Feel free to post replies to this message with requests so I know what to bring to the table. I know I'm always looking for unique live drums.

technical solutions ?!?

email boxes are not allways that big, although samples aren't either of course but it can run up to several megabytes if you send lots of samples :

FTP servers aren't very hard to set up but I'm not an internet wizzard by miles so maybe someone has some cool tips to set up FTP servers / clients. Fetch seems the way for mac ... how about PC ?

other 'exchange' possibilities' ?

I could probably set up FTP on IP. Our cable modem isn't super fast on the upstream (Almost par with DSL, though!)

I would be willing to offer a page on my server to accommodate the larger files.

We can provide downstreams of up to 100MBPS.

Let me know.

I ftp all the time, but with the smaller files straight between users...i think a great solution may be for us to use iChat or AOL AIM software in tandem...in which with ichat at least you can simply drop files in the chat window with ease...and it's very efficient on speed (as fast as the slowest connection).

Great idea.

Seems to me that peer-to-peer would be the way to go unless someone has a LOT of storage space and bandwidth they want to kick in.

Best,

our chat engine lets you do file transfers but in some cases it doesn't work. Has all to do with firewalls etc etc ... I've found that if it doesn't work with the chat it doesn't work with ichat either. At least in my case, being on a DHCP internal network.

e-cue or other L.A. sample-philes:

Maybe we can find a common place to do this. I'll bring coffee & CD-R's (as well as some original samples).

I've got TR-909 and Oberheim DMX custom sampling I did a couple of years back. This ain't yo' father's sample collection...

Yeah.

Fantastic idea. I'll try to remember to check in on Monday. BTW, e-que, I think it's spelled Zulu time. I only know this, because years ago I produced a band named that.

Definately. Me and some other LA cats in the chatroom have been talking about this for a while. Should we do it before or after the Monday thing?

Thanks for the correction Dave.

Bring them Ozo samples!!!

I'm actually tracking drums this weekend specifically so I've got some fresh live drums.

Formats?
Raw audio-files or sampler-patches?
I've got some live-drums that I've layered in EXS24, with ambience-mics etc...

Cool idea!

Check out yousendit.com!

You just pick a file to upload and pick an email address to shoot it to. When it is sent the browser goes to a completion page and you can copy the URL and send it to a bunch of people so you only have to upload once!

Files stay on the server for 7 days and filesize is practically unlimited (I have done 6-700 megs).

This service is limited to 100meg downloads and that's it. It also shows the person's IP address that uploaded the file which some people might not dig. Thanks for the suggestion, but it just wouldn't be feasible.

I checked this service out and it seems to have a limited number of downloads but I couldn't figure out how many. Do you have any clue what the limit is? It may be a good option for those that can't get around their firewalls so they can transfer files in the chartroom. I'd hate to see only 10 people get to download the files or something.

@11 hours 35 minutes and counting...

I've never YouSendIt'd a file to more than one person... So I'm not sure of the limit. You could always reupload a file after 10 download or something.
