The capstan motor on a JH-24 only turns when tape is loaded and pulling tape... we only leave tape on the machine when the machine is in use so the capstan motor only runs a couple of hours here and there [same with the reel motors]... however the rest of the electronics stay warm and happy which is what's important in my world.

BTW, how do you get a gig where you only have to work from 8:30a to 5p? I want me one of them!!!

electricity can come from rewnable sources - solar panels, windmills, damns, or non-polluting nukes. i would be far more worried about driving to and from a distant studio - using up oil and causing pollution.

the Telefunken AK47 says it needs an hour to warm up. however, from guitar amps, it seems 5 minutes is sufficient.

Before starting out on my own I worked for a "boutique" post production facility. Everything (including the Grade A CRT monitors were left on 24/7. All tape machines, computers, hard disk arrays etc were left on. The only things that weren't were the computer monitors. The techs said it was more wear and tear on the circuit boards in terms of heat/cold temperature changes (resulting in the boards expanding etc) if the machines were power cycled every day than it was to leave them on all the time. Also, monitors would lose their calibration if turned on and off too often as would the scanning apparatus in the Telecine machines. Re-calibrating was costly and time consuming when you have 50 or so screens. Add to that the air conditioning to keep the whole machine room at 19 degrees celsius all the time and you had a pretty expensive operation.

Good point.

I read the other day that about 25% of the total power consumption in the world is from home electronics in standby-mode, lights left on and general ignorance of saving power. Saving that 25% would make a difference. Further, about 25% of all the food in the western world is thrown away and industrialized agriculture is by far the biggest energy thief there is. It adds up.

Iīll stop preaching now, back to tube mics.
