What's a good CD burner for a computer? Are internal just as good as stand alone?

Good Cd burner

HI , I was just reading Bob Katz's book "Mastering Audio" today and he said he doesn't like to bring up names of brands, but believes that Plextor makes very good burners..... and also is very good at audio extraction. As far as External, I think they make external drives too. If it's good for Bob, it's good for me...he's the genius, you know !

IMHO, the Plextor Plexwriter Premium is the finest CD-R drive available.

At around $100, it's a no-brainer. Lowest BLER of any drive I've used by far. The PlexTools Professional suite of tools (included) is worth twice the price of the drive alone.

Look Here!

Yes, definately the Plextor Plexwriter Premium/with the plextools proffessional software. I currently have a plextor 712A with plextools pro and works like a charm.

John, I thought the acceptable limit was 220 max/sec, not 220 ave/sec. At least that what it says in the manual.

GPI - I believe the RB states "220 average per second over ten seconds." Which is pretty freakin' scary! If I had a disc that had half of that...

I *could* be wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure that's the specs. Although I guess if you had 220 max/sec, you'd also average 220 average per second. So, 220 max/sec would be a valid (and slightly more stringent) way to interpret that... If you never go over 220, you certainly can't average over 220.

Luke - I'll let you in on a little secret - The "bad" drive (DISC "A") on that page - If you look closely at the "censored" name, you'll notice that it says "Lite-ON LTR (some model number)"

Not that I've got anything against Lite-ON... Except that I've never used one that BLER tested even close to a Plextor... But I digress...

When I was doing all that testing, there was a (Yamaha?) drive that BLER'd much worse (but still within specs). But that LTR had those C2's scattered all over... I could picture the garage band that get's discs like those duped somewhere that doesn't check for errors (like most short-run places)...

I can't even imagine not running the PlexTools Professional suite... It's pretty rare that I get a C2, but it's a much better way to find out about it than anything else I can think of.

Plextor Premium it is.

In combination with Tayio Yuden, I get 0.5-0.6 C1/s on average.

Audio extraction is also the best.

Thanks for the advice

Thanks Massive Master ! Mann....I wonder if that's why some of the DVD's I burned recently have been messing up....little square "pixels" on the the tv. Maybe my Lite on is a POS.... You think it would be ok to believe that since Plextor makes good cd-rw drives, that I should buy their DVD burner ? You think their DVD burner would burn CD's just as good as their cd-rw drives ? Should be the same, right ? The thing is , that I want to burn DVD audio too...... any ideas for the best drive that will burn not only CD's at good quality, but also DVD's ? Or should I just go out and buy individual units? thanks, Luke

I recently replaced my DVD drives with Plextors (PX-712A) also - Tried burning some CD's on them - Fine performance.

I still use the CD drive for CD's 90% of the time, but if you get a good burn and a low error rate, it really doesn't make a difference. I just don't want to "burn out" the more expensive DVD drive on CD's.

My new (Sonica-X) DAW came with a Phillips DVD burner... So far, I've left it in the machine (and added a Plextor Plexwriter, of course!) but I haven't had a chance to do a "head-to-head" with it yet...

If 'm correct the PX-712A also has the C1/C2 error check, so this would indicate that (afa Plextor are concerned) this DVD drive has similar performance.

I'm all ears for the answer of this question. That Plextor they are talking about can be bought for just $88 buck and that's with free shipping too. Hummm.....high-end for $88. That's scary.

cd-r media

Is there any brand of CD-r that you feel is the most reliable, John ? From your experience at mastering , you probably have tried them all. Which do you recommend ? As far as the Plextor writer, does that come with software for burning REd Book cd's ? Also, You've got a great web site, and really informative stuff on mixing for mastering ! Thanks! Luke

No one media performs best with every burner model, but Taiyo Yuden silvers come closest and consistently burn with the lowest errors in Plextor burners, across the board. I've been using TY and Plextors exclusively for about 8-10 years now...

Me too on the Taiyo Yudens.

Someone asked about the Masterlink drives... Alesis changes the drive in the ML about as often as I buy new shoes. So, it really depends on which drive is in yours.

If nothing else - If you burn a disc on an ML, you can always throw it into a Plextor PWP on your DAW and error check it...

From the Plextor website there are two versions of the Premium, an Internal IDE drive and an external USB2 drive (Premium U). Couple of questions;

1. If my DAW is based on a G5 (with an internal Apple DVD-RW) what would be the best way to go? Would the USB version give as good results?

2. What software is being used to burn? I'm very happy at the moment with Bias Peak, exporting Jam files and then burning from Jam.

I'm in need of replacing my Pioneer "Superdrive" in my G4 867dp with an internal Plextor. Anyone have experience with this particular scenario? Should I opt for external firewire?

Thanks for any suggestions, Dean
