Mic questions

Basic Mic Questions
(1)“Ribbon microphones tend to be noisier.” Discuss arguments for and against this
statement.

(2)Even with the help of a good equalizer a omni-directional microphone it is almost
impossible to achieve the same characteristics as a directional microphone. How come?

(3) In order to record well low-frequency instruments such as bass or trombone I need a
large microphone. Discuss the validity of this statement.

(4) Please discuss any important information that you can derive from a POLAR plot

(5) What is an electrically derived and acoustically derived polar pattern?

I'll help ya out though....but you gotta send me $5 for my services......

kidding.............

1) I don't know the answer to this question...I haven't used ribbons a lot.....only once actually...and it wasen't noisy at all.
I do think it might have something to do with the low output level's of the mic's....caused by the ribbon diaphram.....but what do I know.

2) This is due to the proximity effect of cardoid/hyper-cardoid mic's...and it's hard to replacate this with eq's.......
(on a side note.....for extra credit.......proximity effect is the low end boost inherint in cardoid mic's when the source moves closer to the capsule.)

3) LD capsule's have larger diaphrams that are more capable of moving at lower frequencies that bass instruments reproduce.........

I think.....

4)electrically derived is a polar patter derived from test equipment.....acoustically is a polart pattern derived from testing the mic recording acoustical wave forms
