Lexicon 224X or Classic Cart?

Own a functioning 224X, loud fan and off by itself. Got a 480L with 4.10 upgrade so I can use the Classic Cart.

Rarely use the 224X anymore, occasional plate but basically sitting around. Not as clear and clean as the new stuff. Haven't heard the Classic Cart. Can I get by letting the 224X go, and picking up the Cart for the 480L for some Rich Plates? Hate to see a bit of history go, but a lot of them selling out right now. Thanks!

The 224 was released in 1979
The 224 x was released in 1983
The 224 xl was released in 1984,

Don't EVER get a 224, they're too old now, unreliable and unrepairable.
Make sure it's a 224XL. The 224 and 224x comes with a metal remote, the 224XL a
plastic LARC.

But to be save get the 480L + Classic Card.

Hi,

224X and XL are essentially the same mainframe.

The 224x has the blue remote, and the XL has a LARC.

Even the 224XL mainframe is labeled 224X

One of my main used reverbs (plates, rich plate, rich chamber,...)

Agreed.

The difference in sound between the 2(480L and 224XL) has always shocked me.

It always feels like a dissapointment when you are trying to replace the 480L with the 224XL.

Same goes for the PCM91.

The 480L is a true classic.thumbsup

Thrillfactor, I agree with you. You just can't get around processing power either. I remember how shocked I was to hear the 300L after a few months with the PCM91.

You could hear the processing power at work, filling in the spaces.

It's been awhile since I owned a PCM70 but the Classic Cart seems to have a lot of presets out of that vintage.

Thanks for all the info!!! I think I'll pick up the Cart and let my ears see what's happening. There's always a revolving door here in the Verb Factor. If it does the job on the 480, turn the 224X loose otherwise ...

Thanks again

PS ----- There is that neat trick of using the one LARC on the 480 and 224X with the extra LARC out on the 480.

How on earth can anyone say the 224X is crap is beyond me! I wouldnt trade mine for any new peice of kit! I also have a 480L and it does not come close to the sounds of the 224XL. Its the old electronics and quality build they can never duplicate in a classic cart, its more to do with the electronics, hence the vast richness and warm sound! Why do so many top boys still use it? Simple! It simply cannot be beaten for that quality it delivers. Keep it keep it keep it! Or sell it to me!
