how can i utilize my rack gear upon mixdown?

i have a digi 002 rack. right now i mix 100% itb. i have some nice mic pre's(mp2nv,gtq-2 mkIII) that just sit in my rack and collect dust when tracking ends. i am wondering if,and how i can put these guys to work full time instead of part time.

Hi Maskedman,

You could buy a Folcrom summing box. They're relatively cheap. You can then do your summing in the analog domain and use one of your mic pre's for the make-up.

I don't recall if the units you mentioned come with DI's, but if they do you can send stuff out of your digi into a reamp box, then into your fav guitar pedals, then use the your DI to get back into the digi.

I can't really see how else you're gonna use your mic pres during mixing except if you re-amp stuff live.

Hope this helps,
jason

Maybe I am a bonehead but I have recently found that pushing stereo submixes of drums or guitar though my Brent Averill 1272's has imparted a certain quality that I like. I really mean push. I drive them pretty hard. They don't fuzz out but there is some rattling going on if you know what I mean.

The thing I have noticed about this technique is that it sounds pretty crappy when you reprocess through the same pre. Guitar tracks from API, Ward Beck or Sytek seem to sound much better through a 1272. Not so with neve style though neve style. Gets a bit muddy and the highs are weird or something.

I had the same thought about my pre's not too long ago and tried it first on some synth bass. I took my guitar amp approach that all amps are similar when they are clean but distortion from amp to amp is very different. I started pushing these things to clip and eq'ing to taste.

There are timing issues with this technique when working digitally so be aware of the time it takes to make the round trip. Could make some phase issues.

Cheers, wm
