| Lives for gear | Schoeps elastic suspensions :-(
I wonder what is your experience with Schopes elastic suspensions. Today I suddenly saw that one mic is just hanging on the threads (!) - and found the plastic ring was broken at two places near the screws ... I took the other one to see how it is originally done there, considering a repair and to my amazement found that it is TOO broken at EXACTLY the same places (although still keeping the ring together). The mics, suspensions and stands are kept just in my studio room without any moving around, so it seems to be clear that it is kind of a material or construction fault with the time factor working (happening in the same way on both suspensions). I wonder why better materials are not used to hold these precious mics ...

That's why I use Shure A53 shockmounts for Schoeps. --Ben |

It fits very well. I have never worried about a mic in them. Not quite as tight as Neumann KM 100/180 series but they are quite good. If you want something larger and a bit more secure, the Audio Technica 8410 (?- the one with the clip) is better but costs clost to 2x as much. I also like them because it is a very low-profile shock mount. BTW, A53's work well on 414's and M930s too... --Ben |

Still not very clear to me - how comes that Schoeps body diameter fits exactly in a suspension suited for much bigger mics (414 etc.) ? DO you simply push the Schoeps body inside that suspension circle and it just stays firmly there even if placed upside down ?

Ivo- If you notice, all of those mics have a tube that sticks out for the connector- both 414's and M930s have a part that sticks out underneath and that is what I connect to. Yes, it is safe for any kind of mount. The Neumann's are quite tight in that shockmount and the schoeps are firm, but not as tight as the neumanns (I sometimes have to remove the logo on Neumanns to get them to fit). I wouldn't recommend something that doesn't work. --Ben |

hmmm .... dunno but I've been using those elastic schoeps suspension thingies for years now without a problem .... I do know 'bout the broken holders though ... from a quite early point on (after breakin a couple) I've been 'sliding' them into their holders rather then 'clipping' them in .... that's what breaks them imho. we're talking 'bout these right ? :
