Need more info. Describe the mod, age of mic, time of mod, relationship to seller, asking price, etc.

An original piece of vintage gear is always more valuable than a mod. I don't know of many cases where the opposite is true. Klaus may be the best in his field but that doesn't change this fact.

Klaus keeps great records. Get a serial number and call/send him an email/PM. My guess is he:

a) did as little as possible to bring the mic back as close to spec as possible
b) did what an owner specifically asked him to do

If you pass, I'd be happy to have any mic Klaus (recently) worked on (since you don't know what happened since if Klaus worked on it 10 years ago).

Go for it! Just have it authenticated to make sure the mic hasn't been broken since then.

If the mic is modded, it worths half the price.
tutt

Spent your money on a decent mic (Peluso, Wunder, etc,) also buy some Chameleon 1073 clone mic pre and even a Purple and save a lot of money and problems, in the end the sound will be the same.

Should Klaus, the late Stephen Paul, or Tony Merrill mod or have tweaked any vintage mic, usually it keeps its value and is worth more than the stock model.

There's been very few times in the studio a modded U47, U87, or M49 (by one
of the above) gets beat out by a stock version...and the only time I do remember it happening was to a Fet C12. I dont mean C12a, but a vintage C12 changed
internally to a FET design.

I cant imagine Klaus modding a 251 beyond the point it can be returned to its
original form. Better yet get all of the info about the mic and call Klaus, I'm sure
he'll elaborate on the specifics.

Every Klaus modded mic that I know of has sold for MORE THAN the original.

He usually does not mod any mic in a way that they can't be put back to original (and will usually give you any parts to keep should you want that done in the future). That is why people use Klaus (or use to since he is not taking on any new customers anymore and his back log is 2 years).

A friend just sold two Klaus modded U67's and he got 1500.00 more then the going rate for them.

Sorry Guys, but in the collectors world, the word "Modified" means lack of originality, even if it sounds better, even if god made the mod, it is not an all original item.

Collectors drive the prices of that crap, not musicians or engineers, sadly that stuff is on hands of Collectors, that some times, doesn't have anything to do with this business.

PO.

All true. But until someone checks with Klaus there is only an assumption that it was 'modified'. Klaus may well have only done required maintenance. To my knowledge he does not have a KH 'modification' for this mic (unlike U87, U67, U49 (upgrade to latest C spec, etc.)

Hopefully we will someday find out.

modded mics

In a world where doctors and attorneys collect guitars they cant play...in theory...unmodified will bring the highest price.

In practice...high end microphones restored or modified by the "master"...bring higher prices.

Klaus restores as well as modifies

To me, the U67 George Massenburg swears by with Stephen Paul's .7 micron
diaphram has more value than my stock M269....(I mean I would hope so).

That's my experience. I would be more inclined to buy something Klaus went over, as I trust his work. Find out what the mod is, because that mic is as good as it gets imho. There's a reason it's such a classic.
