X73i Vocal Settings Question

Hi Guys and Gals, I have a general settings question for you. I have a small set up here at home, and since i am on my own, I can't really tweak my own settings. For Male Rock Vocals, What are optimal settings, or a good starting point, I like gain, but I have a strong singing voice, and I use grit from time to time. I used the basic settings from my Avalon 737 book, but I am not really sure. BTW I am a guitar player/bass/piano/vocals guy turned recording engineer (wannab). I am running from an akg C12VR into the power supply into the Vintech. So please help me out and be kind.
Best, Audrius

It depends on how much grit you want in the signal. I usually start with the gain around 45db with the output at 2 o'clock. But this is just a general starting point, and you may need more or less gain depending on what type of mic you use and how much you project and how close you are to the mic. For instance if you are a screamer and you are using a hot output modern condenser you may want to turn it down to even further by quite a bit. With the output up all the way that will give you the cleanest sound relative to the input gain. The higher the input gain the more colorful it will become. In terms of tone, again depends on the mic, but if you want it thicker don't be afraid to add a little lows or low mid (100hz-250hz), or cut a little high mid (2khz-6khz).

I am envious, bro! I'm really curious about that mic. On the Vintech end though, to really appreciate it, do a couple takes. Go with one extreme, like Nathan said. Turn the input way down and the output up for clean, then the opposite for colored. Do an A/B and you'll be able to appreciate the options.

When I got mine, I did about 8 tracks of myself doing vocals. I had only owned one tube pre/limiter channel before that, so I did 4 tracks on each of the pre's at the most extreme settings and in between ones to get the characteristics of each burned into my brain.

Don't forget to play with the impedence button too. (even the polarity reversed has a unique sound when the input's cranked up.) After doing this you'll be able to make a better choice of how you wanna sound.

I would save playing with the EQ for last. After getting familiar with the pre, you will really like how the EQ takes the sound and shapes it so nicely. It's a real treat.

Peace....

Cool...... Actually guys, thats exactly where I had my settings right where you said,I had a Little help (Avalon book). But what about the (0) with the (/) through it what exactly does that do? Should I have it in or out? So definately have the EQ IN with the tracking or later ?
Thanks Again

The little zero with the circle through it is the phase switch. On this particular unit to the right is zero degrees (where the left is 180 degrees). I would recommend starting on the setting to the right. You may hear a difference in either position even with one mono source, just use and trust your ears.

Like nathan said that little symbol is the phase button...an example of the purpose of the phase button would be if you have mulitple soruce mics that for some reason cross phase with each other out 180 degrees..bsacilly this button when pressed down while invert the phase of what ever mic is on that unit so that if its phased it will clear up and the sounding mics while sound normal or natural then hearing a nasally phased sound...

If the EQ is flat, you can barely percieve the difference when in or out.
