Lexicon 224X Patch saving.

I picked up a 224 recently in fantastic condition. Even the manual is practically perfect albiet for one annoying exclusion. The section on how to store your own modified patches is missing.
Can anybody help with a little idiot guide as this is the first experience i've had of one i hate to admit.

No it looks suspiciously like the pages were possibly ommitted deliberately!

I followed the directions given on the page generously supplied by vin-gear but constantly get the NO ROOM LEFT IN REGISTERS message. I have checked that they are all clear/empty. Am I missing something or is this a fault that anyone recognizes?

What software version is your unit running, will say on the remote when you boot up. If its 4.4 then you have the nvs, if its not then you dont..

RobJB06 is refering to an original standard "224".

If yours says 8.2, it's a "224X" or "224XL". I am still confused about the dif. Mine is also 8.2 and the serial # plate only says "224" while the front panel says "224X".

Similar thing here. It was sold to us as a 224X, which is what's on the front plate, but when i double-checked the remote during the boot it says v8.2 224XL!

Difference between 224's...

My mistake i thought you had an original 224, your 224XL should be able to save patches, best take it to a tech if its not.

The difference between 224s, briefly:

basic 224 had a white metal remote controller and black front panel, software started at 2.1 and went up to 4.3, these units could NOT save any user patches.

224 could be upgraded to 4.4 software with some eproms and a NVS card (pcb) this added extra programs and enabled the user to save patches, still using the white remote/ black front panel.

224x is the next model up, running 8.1 software with the blue remote (not larc) and 224x on the front panel, these units have more programs still, many people consider this to be the best sounding 224.

224xl this unit it the last 224 model. Running 8.2 software with the LARC (plastic blue and white controller) . Somewhat smoother than the 224x and 224. This is the unit i assume you have winvbass..

Anyway, best of luck with it.. Nice units. Get yourself a 480L and run the 224XL and 480 from one remote for ultimate reverb sluttyness..

If it's any consolation, I have a 480 and never really save the patches. I have the recall sheets (barryrudolph.com) and just fill in the few paramters I've changed from the basic preset. I haven't gotten into heavy editing so it's usually just first page stuff. Worst case scenario you can do it this way.

Before i go off and try to find a compitant tech in my area (South of England if anyone has any tips) could a trouble anybody to do an 'editorial' job on the save page of the manual, just to put my mind at ease that it's not me having a rookie moment. It would be hugely appreciated, as are all your contributions so far.

I just checked and I get the same error when following the save instructions. It says "NO ROOM LEFT IN REGISTERS". When checking, there is nothing stored in the registers. They are all empty.

Maybe we need to replace the battery? The manual says to have a service tech do this but it can't be that big a deal. Something with the RAM maybe?

Another Lex question...

Can anyone shed some light on constructing a replacement LARC remote cable?

Not sure about the LARC cable but I replaced one on a standard 224 (metal remote). It was a standard 25 pin DSUB wired just like a printer cable. I bought a new one on eBay for like $6.00 and it worked perfectly. Check the pin config with a multi meter. Maybe this is something cheap and standard too.

the pin assignment is in the manual (2.2., in the beginning)
1 - chassis / shield ground
2 - receive data
3 - transmit data
4 - transmit common
5 - supply + voltage
6 - receive common
7 - receive data
8 - transmit data
9 - supply voltage ground

i think it's standard rs-422
