| Aurora 8 and the 003 I'm using a 003 with an Aurora 8 (ADAT card installed) whilst waiting for Digi to update HD. It's working fine, but when going above 48 KHz, I can't use ADAT. I only need stereo I/O when doing mixbus processing, and I was wondering if anybody has experience using the SPDIF I/O on the 003 or similar with the Aurora, which is only AES/EBU. There seems to be in impedence difference between the formats, although some people suggest you can get simply get away with a AES-coaxial adapter. If you know of any products that will do the trick, or an easy way to build a cable, that would be a great help. Cheers |

| Why not just record at 48kHZ?

| you can get pro tools m powered and an m audio lightbridge and it will allow you record at 96K with your aurora 8. Lynx Aurora 8 Lighpipe-Lightbridge-Pro Tools M Powered.

| +1 Agreed!!! Yes.....you could get the Nuetrik Digital Audio transformer so as to convert the AES [110 ohm] to SPDIF [75 Ohm] from the Lynx 1604 AES cable, so as to use the SPDIF port of your 003, which may do 96k [haven't tried it to be honest] But you're way better off keeping everything 48K, Are you mixing from PT, back into PT? If thats the case, higher sampling rates won't do you much good with 48K recorded audio files

| I just use those XLR-rca adapters Hosa makes to convert AES to SPDIF when I need to. It works. I'm using short lengths, I know what I'm doing, but it does work. You can get away with plenty in digital but the "right way" to do things is truly foolproof (i.e. high-interference environments, long runs, cranky gear, etc.). |

| Thanks a lot for the replies. I've only ever used 96 on projects with minimal track counts, but I think you're right--probably best to just stay at 48 and save myself the hassle altogether. Thanks Peeder, I will look into that in case I get high sample rate sessions in the future. I think the Aurora is a really nice unit. I got a great sound on a choir recording I did yesterday using 4006s through a Pacifica>Aurora. Really warm sounding. And did it at 48. Roc--I got a session at 96 from a guy and wanted to run it through my vari-mu/ibis on the 2bus. Are you saying, if I got it at 48 and upsampled to 96 it wouldn't improve it? The only way I can currently stay at 96 with the current project is to run it in and out of the 003s converters. Do you guys think it would be better to downsample the sessions to 48 and use the Aurora's converters instead? Thanks--Will |

| The m-powered stuff does seem more connectible, which boggles me slightly, but I'm sticking with the 003 until the new HD. I can't bear to spend 3-6k on the current HD stuff when it's going to be (is?) obsolete very soon. But does anybody have an idea whether it's better to convert the files to 48 and use the aurora's converters over the 003's 96k? |
