Telefunken Elam 251 or U47 for vocal

Hi ,

I would like if the Telefunken Elam 251 will be the best choice if I one mic for voices ( Male and child voices ) compare to a U 47 of neumann or the Telefunken U 47 M .

The Elam 251 is good as the U 47 in the low frenquency ?

Dude,
If you've got the money to even be considering one of those mics, you don't need to ask the question. Get them both on a demo from a reputable vintage dealer and try them yourself. Or, find a studio in your area that has one or both and go rent a few hours. It's hard to say which would be better for your purposes because every vintage mic will sound different due to aging and care or lack there of. If it were me, I wouldn't lay down any bread until I sang on the mic and had it tested by a good tech.

Also as you can't buy a new Nueman I'll guess you'll be looking on the second hand market. Be aware they all sound different.
Try before you buy !!!

'tis true - one U47 will likely sound diff. to another (not to mention nuvistors vs. VF14s lah de dah)
As for U47 sounding 'better' or 'worse' than a 251 - they're diff. mikes so they sound different to one another not better/worse.

but hey - if you're splashing out - why not go the whole hog and get one of each .

No easy answer to what might seem a simple question but in reality is a very complicated and almost impossible question to answer. The perfect mic for vocals doesn't exist (yet). It is a very personal and dependent on a zillion factors kinda thing.

Best thing would be of course to try them out both and compare them ... possibly with some contendors ... after all it is a lot of money that we're talking about and you wanna make sure that it is the right one for you imvho.

Anyhow .... my guts says the U47 is the more suitable for vocals mic of the 2 ......

I use the new Tele 251 almost everyday and I find it to be exceptional. I like the fact you can record a vocal track with enough tops to cut through distorted guitars without sibilance. In conjunction with a 1073, 512, V76 or VIPRE it is thick, warm and sweet. It is a quality mic that is a pleasure to use on every source I've tried.

251

Both incredible mics, but if I had the choice, 251.

in my opinion, i really think they handle different types of vocal cords.
together, they cover many bases.....with either one on its
own, there might be singers who are not as flattered by one or the other
of these mics.......

be well
