I think i miss my C24 :-(

I sold it about 2 months ago -- i got a pretty penny for it -- i wanted a mic with more character, less color so i got a Royer SF-12 -- love the Royer, but - i think i miss the C24

Please ... someone give me a reason why i shouldn't miss it ....

Or i bend over and maybe get another ....

Reason #1

You wanted a Brauner Stereo anyway.
(sorry, that was too good an opportunity to pass up)

WHY?

"a stereo mic with more color"

wow ...

dude ...

(so Brad, the Brauner has "more color" than a C24 ... interesting)

Get an SM-2. We use them on backround vocals and overheads and piano. Royer is great too. Very different mics though. The Royer is great for overheads.

LOL @ Jules!!

Actually, i basically swapped the C24 for the Royer, a Trident S20 (which im 'sorta' happy with) and a few other odds and ends. So i came out ok.

I never really liked the sound of the C24 as an overhead mic, too much coloration/brightness, i much prefer to use the Royer and color it as i wish with a nice EQ (since it takes to EQ so well).

But i am missing the C24 as an ambient mic .... that is where it would shine the most.

*GULP* - The Brauner is 10 grand !! I could never bring myself to spending that for a mic ... Never ... i'm sure its great!!! As is the mic it's modeled from .... but ..... 10g's

There are a few brokers with a C24 -- here i go again!

Surely, im not the first to liquidate for a new piece, then turn around and buy back the gear i initially dumped??

So yeah ... anyone want to buy a Fairlight Fame ?? Know anyone else who wants one ?? (ill cut ya a commission) !!!

Wolfgang:

Its always a drag to change something around with gear and find out what you now missing because of the change. But you have gained some sounds too. Do you depend heavily on distance micing or are you wistfully thinking about the C24 on those rare but unique situations?

C24's are a one of kind mic. I don't think its possible to get exactly that from any other mic. Even C24's vary unit to unit, but that"soft/sweet" top end is totally unique and could be the perfect distance mic (if only they weren't bass light). Its been a proven winner for such a long time at distance, and there aren't exactly a ton of those types of LD mics being made any more. The Brauner Stereo is about it, doesn't "fade" with distance, isn't as soft a top end but does have nice low end. The SoundField, that's also something that sounds really good at distance and costs about 5K [422B]. You get B format too (what an overhead mic!). Those are the only two (new) mics that I know for sure fit that ambient application properly and have less phase problems-at least from my world.

Outside of that, maybe a pair of U99's in M/S? Or a pair of ?? in M/S? Maybe M/S is a low cost way to get your ambience and lessen the loss of your C24?

Wolfy you may turn your nose up at Studio Projects but the LSD2 mic is a nice product and a bargain at $900.

It's a dual 6 micron, Chinese cap. Similar pattern ... definitely worth a listen.

Obviously you've never spent much time with a good C24.
