What tuners are you guys using at the studio? I am currently using the top of the line Boss model with fine tuning, and an old strobocon. I'll look at the model numbers of both tommorow...... They are both working great, but I'm curious what others use.....Anybody try the new Peterson model that can read multiple notes at the same time? |

I've got the Peterson Vs-1. Works great, no complaints.

What do you think of the Strobostomp? Is the DI any good? I considered getting one. I do a lot of acoustic solo stuff, and it seems like a good way to go. I was disappointed that it can't be phantom powered. I understand that a lot of people would say it's impossible, but the geektronic types have overcome so many "impossible" situations. Look at the guitar amp head switchers. We didn't think that would work, but... I'm just getting tired of buying 9v's

I really really like the strobostomp. Mostly because it's so damn accurate! I've yet to try the DI so I don't really have an opinion there... I'll check out the DI and get back to you... Alex |

I still have my semi-vintage 1976 Conn. I like being able to see the overtones which'll tell you if a string is dead.

I have a 1950's Conn ST 8 It's being repaired right now, I've been witjout it for 3 or 4 years now and miss it badly. Cant wait to get it back... Here's one for sale! (and some pictures) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=22672 It keeps musicians busy... now I think about it. Play & mess around with the tuner - simple!

I A/B's the Conn vs. the Strobe mode on the Boss and sold the Conn to my luthier. The Strobostomp and other Peterson's are cool too.

I've been using a Peterson strobe tuner since early seventies. It stopped tuning certain notes about ten years ago and a trip back to Peterson put it right ( with a recal , also) and it's been right on the money ever since. Their tech at the time (and hopefully, still) was a very sharp lady who knew from my description on the phone exactly what was wrong. It's always a pleasant surprise to get a knowledgeable person on the phone for a twenty year old machine...kudos to Peterson. Most often when I call a company to get service for anything over 6-8 years old I'm told " We never made anything like that" ( sure pal, it's just you don't know any product that pre-dates your short career with the company) or I get " That was made when XXXX owned the company, and now that Harmxx owns the company we don't fix it any more" Thanks a hell of a lot! OK, I feel better now.....some companies/ BAD. Peterson/GOOD! |

I've got a Sabine RT-7000 in my rack... It's not a Peterson or a Conn (damn that ST 8 looks cool!) but I'm pretty happy with it none the less. thumbsup

Yeah, the conn st8 is what I have too... That electro voice crystal element mic that comes with it is great for "telephone vocal/lo fi" sounds. I also like to put it as a room mic for drums and gate it so I just get the snare "whack"... bad sounding but in a good way. |

I've got a couple of Korg tuners which seem to work fine. There's also a Sabine ST-1100 floating around which is accurate as hell but it differs from the Korg a bit in pitch so it rarely gets used, matches up with Boss tuners pretty well though.

I have a Peterson VS-1 I use on everything EXCEPT guitar and bass. Believe it or not, for those I like to use a Korg GA-20. It's a little bitty credit card sized thing, I think it was less than $20. It has 1/4 in for electrics and bass (does the low B on a 5-string), and a little built-in mic for acoustics that really works. I'm always impressed with how fast and accurate it is, little fake needle style meter and all...

I have a strill working Conn ST-6 here. Looks just like the ST-8. Mine has an RCA on the back that I have always thought was an output. I haven't tried it, but I have wondered if this thing could be used as a tube pramp. It has a big tranny inside, and lots of tubes, thats for sure. As far as tuning overtones, what Bob is saying is that you can look at the inner wheel of the Conn and see what the overtones are doing. Also you can tune a note a 4th higher by looking at the innerwheel. Its handy for brass players, since their fundamental tuning notes are spaced a 4th apart. Also if you learn how to read it right, like the difference between when it lights up strong or darker you can tell tone quality from it. Its handy to have. I am actually looking to get rid of mine now that my days of playing Tuba are over if anyone is interested. Beez |
