Another, Another CM7-GT Users Thread

It seems we lost our little CM7-GT discussion in the Great Gearslutz Time Travel of '08 so let's try this again...

CM7-GT users come out of the woodwork! The discussion has died down a bit in recent months and I would love to hear from some of you out there regarding your experiences with the mic and both the K47 and M7 capsules.

I think I prefer a little bit of high end added to most u47s in a full mix situation so I'm leaning toward the K47 capsule. I believe one user posted on the first incarnation of this thread that to him the M7 capsule seemed like a nicer mic in a solo vocal singer/songwriter type situation where the K47 shines a bit more in a full production...

I personally think the M7 sounds a bit better with a pro EQ adding a bit of top end when necessary, it's got a hair more depth or something not measurable. But it's a small line on the differences, some people don't want to EQ so they like the extra top of the K47 (which is still not quite as airy as something like a Bock 151). You can't lose with either. If you have been recording for a while you'll be able to make an educated guess based on how you generally work tracks. For just over $3K both of these mics are really a godsend IME.

We lost that thread? Bummer, bummer. CM7-GT owners gave some really good and useful information in that thread.

Thanks for starting it again.

I've got a CM7 with both capsules, and they respond as you noted. The comment in the next posting is as my experience as well - a bit more breadth in the M7. They each do what they do. It just depends on what you want to do. I started out preferring the K47 after comparing the two, but then went back and listened to some comparative recordings and realized I liked both equally for different reasons. Sometimes I feel that if I only had one I'd go with the K47; other times I enjoy the M7 more. It's not a linear thing - it's situational and personal.

Buy the M7 and if you don't think it's bright enough, return it and get the k47...problem solved...

Can't say enough about my GT with the M7 cap. I've used it now on everything form Jazz to Punk Rock and I have no problem at all dialing in a little top end if needed. What a great mic.

I really wish I could get a K47 and an M7 GT side by side in my room...

I've listened to all of Johnkenn's posted clips about 10,000 times and the smoothness and warmth of the M7 is unbeatable. I wish there was a clip of the song he used to compare the 2247LE and the CM7-GT with the K47 cap though for direct comparison. I don't believe the K47 and M7 ever went head to head...

The guys at Wunder basically described the difference as a slightly more aggressive top on the K47 and a slightly smoother midrange on the M7.

Put me down as a K47 owner, if you're keeping score. My CM7-GT/K47 was ordered 4/25/08 and I hope to have it this week sometime.

in order of importance. I might go as far as saying that smoother mids are more important than bigger bottom end. I just don't know, I'm so discombobulated with this problem that I just want to drop and die

Well I had both mics in one k47 and one m7. The m7 is larger sounding the k47 cuts and sits on top of the mix while the m7 kind of "inhabits" it. I ended up choosing the m7 but its still a little dark for me. One word of advice. DO NOT use the m7 with an avalon 737 strip. It's too spongy sounding. Tried it with an api strip and WOW. Such a personal intimate mic is the m7. Very natural and smooth as silk. K47 is more of a modern sound I guess. Its thinner but clearer and less woolly than the m7. I'm waiting on a brighter m7 version. Excellent mics. Blew the blue bottle with b7 cap out of the water

Big Bottom, Big Bottom
Talk about mud flaps my girl's got 'em...

Talking about mids, I am CONSTANTLY fighting 1-4.5K...I'm harsh at 1-3khz and then I'm sibilant at 4.5-5khz...The M7 GT that I had got rid of the harshness - but it also got rid of any semblance of presence too...I sold it to Lakeshorephatty and he loves it. I thought the k47 I had was really nice - however, Mike sent me a k47 head to try with my CM7 body and I thought it was too bright. The first CM7 I bought was bright as shite, I then got another that was a V15 with a pF of 87.5 and although less bright, it was still pretty harsh on my voice - it just seemed to "have teeth" and it could snap at you in a screeching chorus. So - I ended up with a M7 V15 with a pF of around 80. I really like it. It's not boomy, but it seems to be a little bigger on bottom - it seems to have some balls like I expected a vintage 47 to sound like. Now here's the big question: is it worth $5500? I've come a long way with several things...taste, gain staging, compressing, proper mic technique (not singing with the mic in my mouth) and even room treatment. There's part of me that would REALLY like to try a Peluso 2247 LE now. It really is a great mic, I just found it to be a little harsh in those problem frequencies for me when I really started belting. I also remember that it didn't seem as consistent throughout the dynamic range; e.g., it would lose some bottom when really hitting it hard. What I want to know is how much of that could have been attributed to me not using it correctly and how much is just the limitations of a PCB, cost cutting mic. (no offense, but there are corners that are cut to get to that pricing). I'm really tempted to try to pick one up used and shoot the shit out of these things...I'd like to include an AK47 too.

Speaking of "leaving this behind", John, when you decide to get rid of your CM7 after moving on to your Peluso or AK47 phase of life, pm me please. I'll give ya a couple a' grand for that worn out old CM7 (I'll need a stereo pair)..

I'll wait a year for the $1000 price hike, then I'll sell it for more than I paid for it...

I'll get out before the big CM7 bust of '09

K47 here. It's a little brighter than my CM7, which is intentional. Not as bright as my Peluso 2247LE. Slight differences between all these and they're all keepers.

M7 Here

It can want a little high end boost in some situations (although not all) but it takes it beautifully and with or without a boost it has a rich and fat midrange that makes a vocal sound . . . Right. There are lots of great mics and this one is pricey - you have to decide for yourself whether it's worth it to you. But I LOVE mine - smooth as silk, and buttery. Personally, I wouldn't swap for a K47 - I don't believe I could EQ in that fat midrange if I had the K47 whereas I am sure I can give the M7 air with EQ. EIther way, it's a fine piece of equipment, though.

Anyone have experience using the CM7-GT with a Tonelux MP1? I've got a Sta-Level and Tonelux rig on the way and am curious about how that pre matches up.

Anyone have an idea of the wait for these? I figured a couple weeks but it's been three now and best I can get from my retailer is he is told "soon"... For those of you that have recently gotten one, what was your wait time?

Thanks,

Ordered mine on 5/6 and received it on 5/15. However, I'm not sure if mine was brand new since the ziploc bag inside the wood case seems like it's been used a lot and the power supply had some adhesive goo on it like someone had taped something to it at one point. If you're buying 'new' shouldn't it seem 'new'?

Yes, it should be brand spanking new, if you bought it as such.

Who did you buy it from?
