i know it sounds stupid. I have found you usually get what you pay for. This for more composing hip hop and mixing it. I need to hear detail in the lows (very important) but an overall hi end deal.

I have those, the Edition 9. Fantastic headphone, very accurate bass, actually it's probably the most accurate headphone for bass.

Not necessarily. Check the AT Ath-M50's. Tons of details in the low end (and high end) And they only cost just over $100.

I've used 240s for years and just popped for some HD650s. A totally different experience - the 650s are focused, detailed, crisp, and unrelentingly accurate (for better or worse).

The 240s DO have more bottom end, and I still enjoy listening to tunes on them and using them for tracking, but the 650s are like looking at the world with glasses on in comparison. I was using them for an orchestral session today and they were fantastic.

Whether this is awesome or not depends what you're after....but I've been impressed. If you're looking for really big low end, though, you might want to look at other options....the 650s tell you what's going on but don't hype the bass.

I really want that detail so i can clean up my lows. So lows are important but of course without jeopardizing the rest of the frequencies as far as quality. Detail detail detail

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones

there where a lot of good reviews from consumers but this one caught my eye. Don't know if it's valid or not but I was pretty close to jumping on a pair. Still might though

"I've read a lot of good things about the Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones. They are supposedly very accurate throughout the frequency spectrum with "no little white lies" according to their advertising. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is SO much 200 Hz bass emphasis it's ridiculous. The bottom end is positively portly. The high end is muffled and doesn't sound anywhere near the claimed 28 kHz. All in all, I was very disappointed in these headphones and returned mine. Save some money and get the Sennheiser HD280's."

could just be some bs but this was really the only negative customer review

You can give the Ultrasone PRO 750 or 2500 a try (first is closed, second is open). If it needs to be cheaper than those you can always give the Ultrasone HFI-780 a try. Suprisingly defined bass for the amount of money. As with all Ultrasone's, they require about 200 to 500 hours of burning-in before they reach their top quality.

Yes I'm an Ultrasone fanboy. I have a Grado RS1 and HD650 aswell btw, and listened extensively too many other headphones.

A good headphone preamp really helps the sound much as a Bryston amp helps Ns10's.

I bought into the whole... everyone is using 7506's. They suck.. don't get them They have no lows and a mid high that will fatigue the entire world in 2 minutes. I know... Roger Nichols uses them. Get some Senn 280's for 100 a pop and call it a day. They isolate well. If you have the dough and want to get fancy the akg's or ultra's are nice. Especially for a singer who wants a little more detail. My 2cts.

Reviews are way positive from most of what I have read. I wouldn't put too much stock in one negative review. Besides headphones are very personal. You will never find one that everyone will like. These are certainly cheap enough to try for yourself. And very easy to resell if they don't work for you.

Thumbs up Grado Labs

Hey irthwirm,

Try the Grados. I have the 325i and I love them. Super detailed, not expensive (aprox 300 bucks after tax), great frequency response, great extremes (low and hi). Only things are 1. they are open cans, so for live sound or a gig that is not isolated not very cool and 2. some people find them a bit uncomfortable after wearing them for long. But I love them.

P.S. I'm not a salesperson. That's just my 2¢.

Peace!

One more for grado

I just bought the 325 and I love them. Smooth. They remind me of Genelec monitors somehow. I often record musicians who want to hear their instrument in real life (not in the q mix) so they take off one side of their phones. The 325, being open back, gives me an option to let them hear a nice stereo q mix and hear the natural timbre of their instrument at the same time. another fringe benefit of open back phones is that they can prevent a heart attack. You know... you are deep in concentration inside phones and someone taps you on the shoulder at 3 in the morning. With open back phones, you can hear them coming!

You're right, sometimes they hurt. I constantly put them on and off while working. Anyways, they're some cans that I've learned to trust more than many environments that I work in.

As for the 600 HD. I know they are good but the moment I said "no way Jose" was when I had the Grados and the Senns, side by side. Day and night, Grados being my absolute choice. I haven't found something better (have yet to listen to the higher end Grados). Any experiences with their higher end cans or their headphone amp?

I also find the low end on the ATHM50s really overstated and unnerving. Definitely NOT reality...
