Are juggernaut twins in stock right now?

The front page of your site is a little unclear right now:

"NOW SHIPPING!

Stock Status: Sold Out. More coming in approximately two to three weeks."

I have 2k to spend on a new pre for vocals and I'm debating between the Twin or a Martech Mss-10.

We sold out of our stock temporarily, and the faceplate screenprinter printed them upside down, so they had to go back for the correction otherwise more would have been here two weeks ago. Supposedly they are going to be shipping late next week, I'm guessing they'll be here just after Christmas. A deposit will always reserve a unit (in this case at the special price), in order of purchase, as they arrive.

The Martech is a great preamp, but the Juggernaut and Martech are very different sounding. The Martech is very clean and fast (transformerless), the Juggernaut can do acoustic applications nicely, but ranges from 'clean' transformer to 'dirty' transformer sound (depending on the transformer combination you use). It can still be bright/open, but can get dark/thick too depending on the impedance setting or FAT setting.

Yes, they are built in New Zealand, they were designed by Tim Farrant of Buzz Audio (with a lot of input from myself as to how I wanted it to sound and its combination of features). He also designed the APA Revolver, and our upcoming opto compressor. I think we make a unique and complementary team since we are both recording engineers who come from different engineering backgrounds/approaches (and Tim is one of the most talented designers around IMO).

How would this one compare to a Thermionic Rooster for colour options and sound ?

Thumbs up On location with the Juggernaut twin

Folks 'round here know I do mostly acoustic gigs, so I lean towards the clean side of preamp land. For a "color" preamp to earn a place in my remote rack, it has to be something pretty special. Well, the Juggernaut Twin has earned its rack space.

Last week I used it on close mics for a Steinway D. Normally I mic this instrument from twenty feet away and so I did my usual thing with a DPA 4003 pair, APE balls, and a Millennia HV-3 preamp. Beautiful -- but unusable for one piece that was performed with pre-recorded backing tracks played over a loud PA. So close mics were called for, but I did NOT want them to sound too close -- I decided I wanted a softer attack like you'd hear out in the hall. I put up a pair of 4006-TL's with trapazoidal grids inside the Steinway and plugged them into the Juggernaut Twin to get a little help from its transformers. With all the options on this thing, you'd think it might take a long time to dial in a sound, but it didn't. I started with Nickel/Nickel, and spun loading knob, quickly realizing that the 10k setting sounded most natural. Tried the Iron output tranformer... nope, not my cup of tea in this case. Tried the Iron input transformer... nice softening of the bottom octave, just as I was hoping. Mission accomplished!

As it turned out, the artist wanted more bottom impact than I thought he would, but with one button push I was back to the Nickel input transformer and on with the session.

Anyhow, I just wanted to give a thumbs up to Nathan and Tim for making such a versatile box.

Hi David, thanks very much for that.

We've got our heart and soul in these preamps, so it means a lot to hear you say that you are getting nice sounds and that it has made your life easier.

Just wanted to check in. I've been using my Juggernauts day in and out for a few years now. I can say whole heartedly that you can't touch these things on electric guitar. They just sound GREAT.

I'm liking mine a lot on bass guitar DI.
It has a nice punchy tone.

I'm very interested in how this unit sounds when pushed into distortion using the different transformers. I've heard some great examples up here and on APA's website of how the Juggernaut sounds both clean and colored but does anyone one have samples they're willing to share when you push the unit to distortion?

If I recall, James Lugo did a shootout with the Juggernaut. I don't remember if he made separate clean / distorted versions, though. Maybe worth looking for the thread...

Checked the shootout thread you mentioned but it looks like the Juggernaut didn't make it in time because of a shipping problem :(. So, I'll try one more time here. Distorted Juggernaut samples please???

JUGGER!!!

mine just came in today!.. I am a one-man-band indie/post/rock w home studio

Instant love..
I've only had time to test the DI, and will report more in the future after I track drums/gtr/bass/vox (could be a while)

The amount of control is amazing. The literature that APA provides (on their site) is just a spot on representation of what you get. kudos!!

from Clean & Pristine to Oozing w mojo..
the dial-able Punchiness!....All shall feel the violent percussiveness of my guitar.. muhahah

my fav is the control over the "edge" of my tone. I can blur/sharpen the focus on the instrument. I'm really big on reamping, so this is just too exciting for me. I own an ADK MP-1 also... and that piece is all about customization...
but where the MP-1 is a "Mitten", the Juggernaut is a GLOVE

control control &#^$%@!!!

One gripe so far is the name Juggernaut... I prefer "Bad MamaJamma"
or "Who Let the Dogs Out"

To my ears that test doesn't come close to doing it justice. You'd need to do at least 6 samples per track minimum to begin to come close to the flexibility that the 500 series Jugg brings to the table. It doesn't seem +THD was used at all, and its not clear where the impedance was set.

10 samples minimum per track for the Jugg Twin because of FAT and the ability to run out of channel 1 into channel 2's line input, which will double the coloration amount(%) and permutations (total #). It's capable of even FAR more than that but this would cover the basic idea because its more than just transformer choices. We've been planning sound samples for a long time but things have been so hectic, we want it done right and not rushed.

Those samples weren't exactly what I was looking for but it did show me more of what the Juggernaut could do. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

Due to individual part price rises, there will be a slight Juggernaut Twin price increase on March 1st to $2195.

$100 Rebate still off of existing price until Feb 28th (makes it $1895 after rebate)

Thanks.
