These are good samples but i would have liked to have heard the MA5 pushed a little more to show its character better, in gets warmer and rounder when pushed imo.

Carnhill/ St Ives... It's the exact transformer used in the AMS 1073 re-issues, Brent Averill 1073's, etc.

I finally had a chance to fire up my new MA5s and tracked some acoustic guitar. Oh my... I'm thrilled with how these sound. I did some test tracks through the MA5, a BAE 312a and BLA modded Digi002 mic pres. My favorite was the MA5 with the 28k switch enaged. Just really full sounding with a gorgeous top end. The BAE was a little dark for my taste on acoustic. Surprisingly the modified 002 pres sounded pretty good as well.

Lots of great reviews in this thread. I'm just sharing my love for this pre as well.

Just got my pair today..

Just a note for anyone planning on putting these in a Brent Averill 6 space rackmount rack.. You can't put an MA5 in the first slot unless you do some light modification to the rack. There is a screw that sticks out on the back wall of the rack where the sockets are which doesn't let the MA5 seat into the socket. This isn't a concern on most modules, but due to the full enclosure on the MA5, it's a problem. The screw looks like it's probably a chassis ground screw. (there is an extra socket hole punched out here and you can see the wiring through the hole) It could either be clipped or Dremel'd in half or replaced with a shorter screw. But you'd have to take the whole rear panel off where the XLR jacks are to get at it.

I can't speak for the BAE handheld lunchbox or the 11 space rackmount, I've only tried on the 6 space rackmount.

On the R121 with a female vocalist; sound a bit harse, then I tried the 28K that improvement, then I went to the 512c and sound it better...maybe I am used to the 512c, ISA428 and 737SP....
I have taking a break because I will be burning the Focal Twins for a couple of days then I will revisited MA5 on Monday when I'm tracking a flute player...
Until then, I have 2nd MA5 coming tomorrow; gonna keep it boxed just in case I'm not happy with it, then I will leave it with you lions for sale tomorrow

I've never been a huge fan of the R121 on vocals... Did you try any other mics?

R121 > MA5 will kick ass on rock guitar, though.

Yeah, one mic through a pre on one vocalist is not going to give you a very complete picture. Especially a mic that isn't too much of a vocal mic.. I realize that you said you're trying it with a flute player, but that would be kind of ridiculous to get rid of it based on a couple runs. Well it would be good for whoever buys it from you I suppose..

Hi guys, anymore newbie's using these puppies that has not chimed in yet, im getting my 2nd one on Thursday, i got my first one a few weeks ago, yet everytime i track some vocals i get goose bumps, they keep sounding better by the day. i had a band that kept me in session way to long with my ears toasted, but they still wanted a finsihed product same day, so with my not so good ears i sent them home with the vocals a little hot, they called back for a remix like so many artist do (they never learn that you are only good for so long in front of monitors) and want the vocals down but they did quote: damn the vocals sound so amazing even with them to loud it still works but to make things better we would like to have them lowered. Anyways they paid for remix like they should. Not many tracks/preamps sound well at a too loud volume but the MA5 still made it sound well at the louder volume, i guess what im trying to say is the MA5 sits in the mix at any volume well.
I realize that they are a large # of people waiting on there units, what i have not saw is any write-ups/ articles in the audio magaizines, is the company that small ? who cares the product is still KILLER !!!
