DSD/DXD downloads!

Just found a new cool hi-rez site that has started offering DSD/DXD downloads. It's a new site so there are just a couple offerings right now. Hopefully more will be on the way!

I'll have to give you fair warning... a couple of these files are over 1GB!!

2L

Also found a DSD=>PCM plugin for Windows Media Player.

Regards,

That could be the answer to the surround mixes I have done. Cudos to ppl who do this. If we could only get the rest of the industry to follow like Itunes.

Yep - 8 hour download time through my DSL at home! I haven't checked it with the T-1 at work. I'm not so sure our IT person would be thrilled with something like this hogging the company bandwidth during business hours anyway.

If it was my network you would be shifted down in priority so it would be a non issue.

This is all very cool, and I'm sure network speeds will eventually catch up. But for those of us who don't happen to DAD/Meitner/dCS/Mytek DSD converters sitting around, there's currently no way to listen to the DSD downloads. I can't even burn a disc and toss it in the Oppo!

Oh.. but you can. There are several ways.

1. Tascam DVRA-1000HD

2. Korg MR-1000/MR-1

and the cheapest way...

3. Windows Media player plugin!

What's the advantage of doing the DSD-PCM conversion in realtime via a plugin vs. listening to a preconverted file?

It's cheaper.. you don't have to buy a sample rate converter!
This is all about making it available to the mass market. Consumers are not going to want to buy Saracon or whatever. All they want to do is download and hit PLAY!

Right, but if they're also making PCM files available for download, doesn't it make more sense for a consumer to download the PCM file as opposed to downloading a DSD file and converting it? I'm assuming these are DSD sourced recordings, and the PCM files are converted from that, but wouldn't it be a safe bet that they have better conversion software (like, say, Saracon) than a Windows Media plugin?
Now, if they only had a DSD or DXD file for download, and then you had some software that converted (in realtime) to whatever SR you wanted (kind of like the way Korg's AudioGate is supposed to work - I think [I haven't used it]), that would make sense.

I'm a newbee. The Tascam recorder has raw DSD output on BNC, and the EmmLabs dac has raw DSD input on BNC.

So if you downloaded one of these DSD files to your PC and then and stored it on the Tascam, you should be able to play it back from the Tascam through the EmmLabs DAC on your stereo rig?

Otherwise, is there another way to play a DSD file from a PC to a dac without downsampling?

Yeah, this is the way I'm doing it.. sorta'. I have my Tascam connected to my EMM Labs via SDIF.
I also use Pyramix through EMM Labs/DAD.

BTW..these are actually DXD sourced files

Hi,

I just bought a KORG MR 1000 and Im very happy with it, sounds fantastic!
My question is how can I add a DFF file that I downloaded from this HIRES download website to my korg so I can play the DSD file from my KORG?

I tried moving the DFF file to the DFF project folder but KORG doesnt recognise the file.

Thanks!

Thanks for the link! I'm going to try one of the DFF files in a DV-RA1000HD tomorrow and I'll post the results.

The DV-RA1000HD plays DSD from the analog outs. So just transfer the file to the DV-RA1000HD using USB and hit play.

384k, that's so last year. It's all about 768k now. I'm working on a 1536k converter in my parents' basement, it's gonna be sweeeeet.

I downloaded the DSD files last not (not the DXD files). Two of the files played back in my DV-RA1000HD (2L49SACD_TR1__00.dff and 2L50SACD_TR1__00.dff, Beethoven and Britten). The DVRAHD did not recognize the other two. Weird. Does anyone else see a difference between these files? I tried twice and got the same results.

Yeah, but Quicktime isn't playing the DSD stream, it's still converted to PCM.

I had a geek friend look at the files to figure out why two of them work in my DV-RA1000HD and the other two don't. Apparently the header of the file is different on the versions that don't work. Here's the specific info, in case this is useful for anyone:

Quote:
In the header, the position of the "Format Version Chunk" and "Property Chunk"
have changed places. In addition, in the Beethoven and Britten files, there is a "Comment Chunk" at end of the file and there is "Pyramix" text. There is no "Comment Chunk" in the Mozart and Haydn files.

I downloaded the DSD files from 2L and transfered them via USB to my Korg MR1000. GLORIOUS! I have never heard my system play music like I hear from these music files. And these are not 30 second cuts, they're complete songs, up to 10 minutes long.

The Korg plays all 4 files without issue and JonathanEspinosa you transfer any file you want the Korg to play to the 'Audio' directory on the Korg HD. You can make whatever directory you want inside the Audio directory to keep your files organized and it'll play fine.

I had the same problem when I first tried this. Found it mentioned in the manual!

Cheers!
