Peluso 2247 LE or SE?

After intense searching, AB-ing and all, my next mic is going to be the Peluso 2247. I'm not sure though whether to go for the LE or SE. Apparently the SE has a lower noise floor and the sound isn't that much different, at least, that's what I'm told.
Anyone has a view on this?

cheers

Hi,

I was told the same thing by John Peluso. I own the 2247 LE, but I must admit that I haven't heard the SE yet. If I would ever add another 2247 to my mic locker it would probably be the SE, because of its lower self noise and the availability of the tube should I need one in the future.

Good luck deciding!

I gotta admit, I've never heard an SE because the LE is the one that gets all the action. But John Peluso told me when I inquired about it that the SE to him did not sound significantly different from the LE like, at all. He felt the availability of the tube was a great reason for more people to buy the SE but that everybody wants the LE for the steel tube.

I'm not a tube slut, have nothing else to offer here, other than Peluso himself says he'd rather just sell the SE at the lower price...!

Right, so I'll probably go for the SE, I'm no tube-slut myself I guess..
And I need it on a relatively short notice...
Thanks!

cheers

The SE and the LE sound virtually identical. In fact, we have stereo matched LE's and SE's for customers who bought an LE first and then asked if they could get an SE and have them matched. That should speak volumes. Major engineers are using the SE, I use the SE and I always recommend buying the SE to our clients.

Basically the difference is the noise floor is 2db lower on the SE and the tube is still being made, therefore if/when you ever want/need to replace that tube it'll cost you less than $50, whereas the the LE's tube is in short supply (although Peluso does have quite a few of them purchased) and 12-15 years down the road you could potentially find yourself on eBay paying upward of $1500/tube like the original U47 owners are doing with the VF-14.

In my opinion, save the $50 and get the SE. It's a wonderful microphone.

I had an LE, sounded wonderful but the tube quickly developed a random popping noise- At the recommendation of Peluso I had them change the tube to the american steel tube. I couldn't a/b before and after obviously, but to me ears they sound identical, certainly nothing lost in the ghangeover.
