direct recording ..direct box help!!!

i do a lot of direct recording and im always looking to improve my sound...right now i send all my tracks or instruments to a universal audio 2-610 which we all know is NOT a direct box but a mic preamp..will a true direct box give me a bigger sound..
my heavy guitars and lead guitars seem too suffer the most..
as for equipment im looking at a demeter or a manley stereo tube direct box but the sky is the limit so any suggestions will help....
maybe its my converters im useing motu mk3 but will be upgrading to apogee rosetta 96k soon... ive never spent alot of cash on converters which is probably a mistake..ive spent a lot
of money on effects like eventide h8000, distressors, preamps
im getting good recording but just too thin...i cant mic now
because of space and time... so any help would be great

thanks wayne

I'd cheack out the Millennia TD-1. Best DI there is as far as I'm concerned. It also has a REAMP built in and HV-3 mic pre. It has 9 outputs for various purposes and a power soak for guitar, which II have yet to use. There's a tube or solid state option as well.

I'm not convinced that it will solve your problem though. But your problem may be more than which DI. It may actualy have to do with the space you're not getting by using a DI.

Ummm, Wayne, the UA 2-610 may not be your favorite flavor but it is most assuredly a DI as well as a mic pre. I use it all the time and it works great for DI. Is it that you'd like another flavor ?

i would like to point out im useing the speaker simulation that is in my tc electronics g-force which i think is the best ive heard.
i cant stand line6 pod's ....my preamp is a triaxis... what is the difference between a tube mic preamp for warming up my sound
verses a tube direct box for warming my sound..will a direct box give me a bigger sound? my sound is too thin.. i even loop my tracks through 2 distressors with brittish mod and im still too thin..
my tone is great when i listen to it through head phones maybe that means its my coverters.. cheap converters changing my sound?

thanks

maybe its my converters..my tone is great untill i play it back
through my motu mk3 then it loses all the fullness of it...
is that the difference between high end converters and motu

Not real confident about direct guitars, in general, unless you like 'em kinda goo-goo clean, if you know what I mean... The Manley DI is great for getting direct keyboards to sit sweet in a mix with mic'ed up instruments, but for guitar it's mostly good for using on the way to an amp.

hmm...

this is getting very odd. you've got some serious equipment there, to say the least. i can only assume you're going for big fat mondo gonzo guitar tone. TWO distressors set to nuke and it's still thin??? it may be a good idea to strip everything down to bare essentials and start again. go from the compensated out on the triaxis straight to your hard disc. nothing wrong with the motu, for what it is. without being there and trying to get a handle on what you're going for it sounds like you've got way too much crap getting in the way. simplify. i've never used a triaxis but it's supposed to be good at getting those "i am mongo" tones straight to tape. make sure all your boxes are interfacing at the proper levels. and make damn sure all your interconnects are in phase; that's critical, and an easy thing to overlook. it's an instant ticket to thin tone.

no, but what was plugged into it (btw, it was the pga-04 that i was thinking of)? that would have a bearing on the results as well. i really like the thd univalve and i haven't messed with any other amps in that application.
good luck,
joshua

Me too, I have only heard great things about it.

I don´t think the converters are the problem. I think the 2408 mk III is "good enough".

I´m sure you´ll hear a difference. The Apogee is better. I just meant that the 2408 converters can´t be the main reason for your guitars sounding too thin.

Good luck!
