| what makes gear high end? i'm posting this in two forums within gearslutz for (what i believe are) good reasons. may i request that people who answer in one forum don't answer in the other.... a studio making world class recordings CONSISTENTLY requires expensive equipment. true or false? the subject says (asks?) it all, the following links are just pointers in perspective. all of the following are in the 'clean and honest pair of sdcs' category. all of the following are recommended for similar applications by professionals in high places. avenson sto-2: $500 earthworks tc30k: $1045 schoeps CMC62S ST Stereo Pair Set with MK2 Omnis: $2255 dpa 4006 pair: about $3400? a. different manufacturers price their gear differently for all kinds of reasons, many irrelevant to the ultimate sound quality. a studio making world class recordings CONSISTENTLY does'nt need expensive gear, just sensible investments. b. you get what you pay for. in general, higher priced gear provides higher quality. (exceptions to every rule exist...) as always, i don't believe theres a correct answer, i'm interested in opinions... best, self.
