I switched out the part, witch was pretty simple, barring one blasted screw that did not want to come out.

I have had the DMX on for over an hour and all is well. I am going to keep her on while I rewire my patchbay (fun!). This will take several hours.

The board appears to have 2 power supplies. A smaller Lambda unit right above the larger one. I thought I wrote down the part # before I re-installed, but cant find anything googling. ZWS75PF-3J

The newer PS I purchased was made in malaysia, instead of china.

The newer one *appears* to run cooler. I dont know if its because the board isnt covered up by the argosy desk, or if the newer PS actually does runs cooler...

I'll post more later!

That's too bad, I was crossing my fingers for you.

I thought Michael W. had a spare DMX that was doing the same thing... Michael, did you ever get that fixed?

Creation Audio Labs had another DMX for service (dead driver for the light, we know that one) and we started swapping PC boards to see what might be wrong. All boards we swapped worked in both consoles, so we just ended up cleaning all the contacts and now my board has been running for 4 days straight. I took it home to Studio B, so it got bumped around in the car and carried up a flight of stairs and it's still working. The previous owner of my console (#3) was a heavy smoker. There was about a 1/4" of ash on all the PC boards and floor of the console. We cleaned all that up and now it seems fine.

Sorry I can't be of any help with this problem. I would recommend though to re-seat and clean all the connectors on the PC boards. Be very careful, because some of the connectors are just flat cable inside a very sensitive plug. It would be better to consult a person that has at least some experience in doing general maintenance on electronic gear. Find out before what to use for cleaning. And above all DISCONNECT THE CONSOLE FROM POWER WHENEVER THE LID IS OPEN!!!

Thanks for the advice guys! I will give the DMX a good cleaning. I did notice a few dust bunnies frolicing around inside the board. I am guessing a caig contact cleaning would be in order, for the contacts.

Fret not MichaelW, I didnt lose that many brain cells in the 80's . I have had the DMX unplugged whenever I am working on it.

I also purchased the service manual for the DMX. I have the schematics and list of part numbers. I also ran the dmx thru the diagnostics setting, to no avail.

My asst thinks it maybe a cap somewhere on the board that both the PS and the power xformer hook up to. As when the board has been unplugged, it works for a few hours, but if I leave it plugged up overnite, the dmx freezes within 15 minutes. I'll be checking that out today too.

I'll post if I get any results, otherwise Ill be scotched up!!

Just got off the phone with digikey. A very helpful tech suggested this dk part #: 285-1698-ND. Took him awhile to find one that wasnt screw terms.

The voltage is the same, more amps, and a lil more wattage. He said the board would consume more power=higher power cost.

I'll get this one friday.

Meanwhile, I'll clean the board out and check the connects.

Could you let us know how to run the diagnostics, I couldn't find anything about that.

... the "unplug" hint wasn't directed towards you, it was more of a slight reminder to everybody who opens apiece of gear

The diagnostics setup invovles opening the board up and switching off a dip switch. I have to refer to the service manual for the exact procedure. I am taking the day off today while I wait for the 2nd PS which should arrive tomorrow.

I will be at the studio tomorrow and will post the diagnostic setup.

Also,

I was poking around the DMX with a volt meter and noticed that 2 caps on the Lambda PS that I just ordered to have replaced, do not pass any volts. I certainly hope this PS is the issue.

I guess there is a reason Lambda no longer makes that certain power supply?

No luck with the other Lambda PS. I borrowed a fluke multimeter and I am going to check the caps on the daughter board hooked up to the transfomer and on the cpu board tonite. If I cannot find anything wrong, I am taking it to LD systems on monday.

As a last ditch effort, I pulled all the cards and turned it on. Lets see what happens...

Heres the diagnosis test, I could nott get it to work right.

Thanx for posting that sdf. I assume that is just a switch and lights check, probably not checking any of the PC boards, unless the switches or lights are connected to such.

Cool

I thought the test would be a lil more involved too. There is another test to check RAM CMOS, IIRC. I ran that one too and all seemed fine.

I pulled out some caps on the DC102 board that attaches to the 2 power regultors and the main power transformer. I found 4 bad caps!! I first thought the Fluke meter I borrowed was hosed until I pulled that 5th cap and that one read right! I am going to replace all 7 caps on that board and see what happens.

Once again, wish me some more luck guys!

Unhappy

I got the caps yesterday and replaced all 7 of the big ones on the DC-102 board.

Now I am having another problem!! The DMX will not boot into the sony OS. It will boot all the way up to where the readout above the jog wheel does all the crazy numbers, and then the it reads *busy* and nothing happens.

I booted into bios for over 3 hrs, so I think I solved the power issue, but I think I may have screwed the software somehow. I downloaded the 1.18 version and the 2.23 version. Loaded them on DOS formatted floppies and tried to downgrade the software and then upgrade. I went thru the upgrade procedure, but the DMX says it cant find the files on the floppies?!?!

What am I doing wrong? Should I just buy the software anf then re-install? Do I really need to downgrade 1st?

Has anybody seen this *busy* problem I am having?

Help!!!

sdf, I think you need to have the version 2 QNIX OS installed before you can install ver. 2.xx of the application software. Do you have that?

You should not have to downgrade the software in order to upgrade it again, but if your little disk-on-chip in there got erased, you'd have to reinstall the OS first.

Killa,

I didnt get any software disc when I purchased my board used. I was able to download the DMX software from sonyserviceplus.
I can boot into the bios, which is the QNIX software. My board has v2.23 installed. Can I just re-install that?

Killa, I just booted into bios, and I have Bios versio 1.01. Maybe when the disc got zapped the bios reverted to the bios eprom? This is what I need to update?
Where can I find these disc?

If you have 2.23 already installed you should not have to re-install the OS from 1.0 to 2.0 unless it has reset itself. The software is HERE
I can't find the OS software (Killahurts?). If you need it contact me via email and I'll try to copy it on a floppy when I get to the studio, unless we can find it online.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious, the procedure to re-install the software is:

eject the floppy
switch off the console
hook up a PC keyboard to the back of the console
switch on the console and hold down ESC
At some point it's going to ask you if you want to update the software (might take a while)
answer [y]
now insert the floppy and hit any key
The software will be updated to 2.23 (if that's the disc you inserted)
follow the instructions on screen to finish the install.

I'll keep my fingers crossed

I think I may just need to re-install the OS and then the application. MW, your link is where I downloaded the sony app files. I downloaded on a pc and copies to a dos floppy. I followed the instructions per manaul v2.0, for the upgrade and when I try to load the disc, the sony says it cant find the program files? If the sony OS was hosed, I guess it might not be able to read the disc? The app is a .FE linux/unix app?

I found QNX on line and downloaded an iso. cdrom of 3rd party software hoping it *might* be on that. Nope. I found a parts store online that has the sony upgrade for v2.11. Its $62 and I'd have to wait on shipping. It would probable be a good idea for me to buy it anyways. I would mosdef want to know if it came with the OS V2.0 upgrade in addition to the app v2.11.

I just got a UA 2192 and want to beat myself with it cuz I cant hook it up to the sony. Instead, I have it and my HD rig hooked up to the DA7.

Yes it did.

I think I have the software you need, but no time this morning, and I can't find the wall wart that powers my ext. floppy drive.

Not sure if it's the right version, but I think it is..

Hang tight till this afternoon...

Y'all are speaking in unknown tongues (QNIX?) to me but I've got a bunch of stuff that came with my DMX when I bought it from Jim Vanzino. I'll head out to the studio here shortly and report back on what I've got. If you need it I'll get a copy off asap.
