consumer cd/dvd/sacd digital out

Is there some kind of box that will convert this to something I can use or can I use it already with my HD192I/O? Or to analog? I want a standalone function, I don't want to have to launch ProTools to listen to a disc.
Right now I'm using the units converters and analog section, I think you could do better. No?
On the back there's a ?SPDIF? that says PCM, DTS, DolbyDigital etc... and an optical out that the manual doesn't explain well what it is. on the rca jack I only get stereo so it must need a decoder. Before I buy the optical cable and give it a try I'd like to know if it might work.
I'm more interested in a standalone box with better D/A and analog section or a no compromise player for simplicity's sake.

There are menu settings for the digital outputs of most DVD players.
