Best Ribbon for Male Voice and Acoustic Guitar

Hi,

Enjoy the one mic, tracking live, voice and flatpicked acoustic guitar thing.

Own AEA R84 and R92. I'm curious to try something else. How's the Royer 121 for this application?

How about a true omni? Much easier to get a balanced sound vs a ribbon in that application it seems. Ribbons have a fairly narrow vertical plane of response. An omni wouldn't matter near as much with player movement, and you simply bring it in closer to balance with the room sound.

Just a thought.

Congratulations on the upcoming child, is it a tie-breaker (like you have a boy and a girl) or are you stacking the deck?

Avenson STO-2: I know you have to buy them in pairs but man, what a natural sound. They come with a bit of a noise floor which really only matters with very quiet sources.

Red Type B with R4 capsule: More top end detail etc, a great combination of transparent sort of detail and lower noise. The low end is enhanced on this capsule so it still sounds big and up close if you want to work it away a bit.

Both of these are true omnis, opposed to dual diaphragm mics in omni pattern which fail miserably off axis by comparison.

Thanks Warren!!

Yes this will be girl #3. All I can say is thank god we don't have the dowry system here in America.

You're always raving about those RED mics. If I ever buy one, I'll definitely come your way. It'd be very hard for me to part with the vibe of ribbon mics, but they are certainly very tricky to place right for the thing I'm doing.

I've never worked with the AEAs, so I can't compare.
But I've used a R121 on each of the sources you named and think it works fine for both.
If you plan on recording voice & gtr. at the same time, you probably won't get too close to the mic, so you won't risk blowing the ribbon while using it's brighter (but more spl-sensitive) rear side.

(right thread after all)

I use an RCA77dx all the time for vocals and acoustic guitar. It's not always the perfect choice, but like anything else it depends on the song.

Here is a 77dx compared to a Nady RSM-4.
