Thread Starter | Weird HUI Question
The weirdest thing is happening. I hope someone here went through the same thing and can help. Let me explain what I have first. I'm using PT's with the HUI as a controller and a playback mixer as well. When playing back material on the HUI it goes through a Hafter amp which is connected to a monster cable speaker selector then to most of my speakers except for my new Event SP8's-(Oh do I luv'em) which is directly comeing out of my HUI to speakers. OK...Sometimes the right speaker goes out and only left plays. Sometimes the right speaker is louder than the left. When either situation happens I turn up the volume knob on the HUI until both play at the right level. I know this is dangerous because sometimes they don't play right until I really play it loud. Now that I have my new Event's I don't want to blow them by doing this. When I mess with the back of the HUI or just move the HUI a little it plays right for a min and sometimes for the rest of the day. I thought it was the amp but when hooking up the Events which are powered it still does the samething. Then I thought it was the cables so I change them and still the samething. Most likely it's the HUI and it seems that it could be a cable that maybe lose inside but I'm not a tech so I don't know. When looking to open it i didn't know here to start. How do you get in this thing? It's of course past the warranty. What would make it play right by just turning it up all the way? It seems like the more the volume, makes it cut on. Really weird. Don't know if that is considered a short inside of the HUI. Again I'm not a tech so I have no idea. Can someone help on this. PS. I apologize if ths is the wrong forum for this as I will post this in many forums until getting the right respone. Thanx M2E

I have the same problem exactly. My solution is to bang it like a jukebox on the lower left hand corner. My assumption is that it has something to do with a dry solder joint that loses contact as the heat fluctuates inside. I haven't fixed the problem yet because I'm waiting for a large format console to arrive in the studio and take over the monitoring duties. I hope this happens before I break the plastic cover. I've never owned a piece of Mackie gear that didn't **** up in one way or another. Let me know what the problem is if you take it to a tech? |

Hey M2E, Got the Events, eh? Cool, someone else has them now... . Glad you like them.Your problem sounds like a simple loose solder connection. I haven't used the HUI personally... but I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard at all to open it up and just check out the connections near the output. Maybe if you're uncomfortable with that, you could find someone who has done basic electrical work. It really is like one of the simplest things. My GUESS about the volume thing, is that when you turn up volume, there is more juice going through the circuitry, so it finds the way through the loose solder. At lower volumes there is less juice, so it can't make it. That would make sense to me. Anyway best of luck to you. Aaron |

aaronsternke- First I would like to say thanx for advising me on the Events. Yes-I did it. I went to guitar center and did a A/B test and the Events were much bigger a better sounding than the Mackies. I also got them at around the same price as you did. I got them out the door for $1077.00-WOW!!! Again Thanx for your help. As far as the HUI goes. I'm trying to figure how to open this thing. I looked on the back and saw no way of doing it from there. As I'm writing this I just thought about the bottom. I have it in an Argosy board and hardly never if ever take it out. Guess I have to. That's a good idea about checking the wires to see if any are loose. Just trying to get in there to check it is a booger. I'll let you know If I get in it. Thanx M2E |

I opened up the HUI by undoing the screws on the bottom. I had a look around the circuit boards but it's not easy to see. It seemed better left to a tech with a schematic and possible past experience with the problem. Come to think of it, I've always had a problem with the headphone output too. Just talking about these issues is getting me worked up. |

Yeah- I opened her up. She was a dooze. I was able to venture maybe a little more than you. I had the screwdriver made for the screws they put on the HUI. I took apart the back to see if there was anything wrong with it or if anything was unscrewed or wires unattached. After looking and blowing and looking again- nothin. But the funny thing is before I put it back in the Arogsy board I plugged it up to see if I could see anything happenning and it started working great. HUH? YUP. So I put it back together and slid it back into the Arogsy and now she's working again. I don't know why. Maybe something happened when I pulled the piece out to look at it but it works none the less. Don't know for how long but I'm happy for now. Thanx Guys M2E |

M2E, Haha... that's funny. I can't tell you how many times that's worked for me. Open it up, look at it, put it back together, and it works fine. Makes you want to go into the repair business. Anyway, glad it works! Aaron |

So you worked with Stacie Orrico too? I recorded the song for the Christmas project that Michael W. Smith produced here in Nashville, the big orchestral cut. My daughter really likes her music. Nice job.
