listening test

Why does it sound like the Neve one was driven too hard some where in the chain? I hear bad distortion on the bass/transient heavy parts. Was this test done properly?

yeah the test is like that. the neve sounds more saturated than the other files. too bad. but the test is still interesting. I liked the Inward Technologies box from that test.

What is the price of the Aurora console? It looks mighty sweet.

It doesn't sound like saturation though. It sounds like a solid state clip/overload. I duno, something doesnt seem right.

A nice test, but the neve shouldn't be considered since it's obviously different from the rest of the clips. Someone did something But I'm glad somebody did a test with all those boxes.

The neve has two transformers, so if you don't use the insert function, you can achieve the same result with a 1073dpa. Even with pads, with the 1073dpa you've got more transformers in the path.

Yeah, that's a good point, but it's not that simple.
People may insert outboard with transformers in each of the 16 channels between the DAW and the summing box.

How old is this thread?

The OP must have already mixed a dozen albums on whatever he ended up with...

Anyways, after having tried most of these for myself, the VK shootout seems less realistic than I would have liked to assume...

vintage king now carries the rascal audio analogue tonebuss, which is reminiscent of a neve sound.

but i'm waiting for the chandler minimixer II which will supposedly have 4 stereo busses and faders.
- the chandler with those features is basically my dream box. ( my other dream box doesn't have electronics in it)

8816 lets you dial in your sound, Chandler just IS a sound.

The width control on the 8816 is major and the transformer sound on the NEVE is real.

In my experience some of these boxes, just like consoles, work better for different types of genres. I work mostly in the hip hop-pop-r&b arenas. The Neve and the Chandler did not work for us when we tried them. The SPL seemed cool, the Equinox was nice, The Dangerous was ok. The ITB mixes stood up tall and the boxes didn't seem like they were worth the extra effort at the time.

It's a very labour intensive beastie to build... there are over 50 printed circuit boards in that box!

This unit is pure genious. I looked at the spec's its everything a real DAW mix fella needs and more. I hope its still available I'm going to buy as much as I can afford. I'll find out tommorow how much the bank will lend me yet again... LOL...

Thanks for this. I imagine I'm going to be buying at the right time too. seems to have been in development and the makers were not selling things they could make better. Great work! I can hear and feel the sound just by reviewing the spek. I hope its affordable.. not more than a chandler. we'll see tommorow. LOL
