Thread Starter | mic preamps in Weiss ADC2 converter box
Sorry, I had already attempted to receive comments on those in an earlier thread...but maybe there are more ADC2 owners out there now than months ago, so I am wondering if anyone has actually ever been able to compare the micpres in that box with the likes of Gordon or Forssell or Millennia (everyone imagines they should be in the crystal clear department). Should one find out the Weiss preamps are outstanding, and comparable to standalone units costing 2-3k, then you may start thinking the very expensive ADC2, reportedly being one top-league converter, is in fact a bargain....or what? thanks for your comments best regards Massimo

i believe mercenary and vintage king both carry these. i'm sure they could both shed some light. have never heard one but i've heard good things about them. sorry for not being able to share from personal experience. I have used the version of AD2 with the mic amps. They're good and adequate mic amps. Fully serviceable and with good program material, in a very good room, you might not need anything else. In no way are they the same quality level as Gordon or even as the d.a.v. electronics Broadhurst Gardens No. 1 or the other top rank mic amps you mention. I would ajudge the mic amps in the Weiss AD 2 as included as a convenience item. The star of the show is the a/d conversion.

Hi Massimo, the pre's in the Weiss are great; very clear but 'cristalclear' is not the word. In fact they have a gentle sound, not sharp at all like some other hi-end pre's; musical and natural, very nice for acoustic music. They are more than just an extra feature on the AD, unless you are looking for a fat tube or transformer sound (which it doesn't have) you won't need to look for another pre with this one. But you can always add another flavour pre later on, brighter or fatter if you like. Also the comp/limit function is very good, based on the DS1; limited of course but definitely great to avoid overdriving the converter. Try recording a voice-over with this unit and you'll be surprised. But the best part of it is the converters themselves, there's no doubt about that good luck, Michiel Hollanders Product Support Netherlands joystick audio |
