hmmm.. really? thats not the way i was taught in school.. i tought my channel faders should be at unity..
Your channel faders are for mixing. Sure, if you want greater fader resolution you could set them all at unity and adjust your input trims till your balances are roughly in the ball park before starting to mix, but you're missing the point. If you're overdriving the master buss pulling down the master fader won't help. Your console is not a DAW.

Out of curiosity, what school did you go to?

cuz the direct output is post eq, post fader, i understand, that goes to nuendo.. the aux sends go to the person recording which would be a different mix for them.. and the monitor knobs are supposed to be the mix for me.. but am i supposed to connect my speakers to the monitor output everytime i track, and then reconnect the speakers to the main speaker output for mixing? wouldnt that defeat the purpose of having a console?
You definately don`t have to replug your speakers at all.

The term monitor is used in two ways. The knobs on the channelstrips labeled monitor control the signal coming back out from Nuendo. The console has separate inputs for "monitoring" the signal from the recording device. There is only Level and Pan available on this signal path , as well as one aux (5/6 I believe) and they go directly to the Master bus , not via the 8 Subgroups.

The monitors you listen to (your speakers) are only connected to the speaker outputs in the controlroom section of the console.

I hope this helps , congrats on your new console. I`m jealous!

im just saying.. that when i mix i usually have some of my faders at unity, of course not all of them.. but at that point my master fader is usually around -10 or -15 or so.. just the same as if i mixed in nuendo.

yes.. i was pulling down the master fader, not the channel faders.

i went to sound master recording engineering school.

ok.. sooo.. theres no way i could bypass the converters to make my own mix? i would have to take the converter outputs to my monitor inpus..

hmm.. so then when i mix would i have to replug my inputs into the line inputs of the console.. that seems like more plugging than i would want to do.

unless at that point... i press the input reverse and the monitor inputs become the line inputs and so forth...

do i have the right thinking?

Yes you have the right thinking , you can flip the inputs (at least for the eq). Or you could just plug into the line ins so you could use all the aux`es and groups at mixdown.

Regarding the masterfader , I think you should experiment with lowering the channelfaders and keeping the buss`es and Master fader higher. You might get a better sound.

Oh I see. Is there noise even when no signal is running thru it? Maybe there is some sort of grounding issue?

Odd. My ATB is very quiet. You do have your speakers connected to the speaker outs, right? Not the main outs? And how far up is the MON LEVEL knob? (just above the talkback knob).

The reason I ask is that I keep my master fader at unity and my MON level control rarely gets higher than about 11 o'clock. Any more and it's too loud for mixing. And with these settings I'm at a good mix level with no noise issues at all.

depending on your mix, i like my fader around unity or above. pushing the master buss barely into the red really sounds good on my atb. the reality is that you may have to go in and fix a cold solder joint on these boards from time to time (rosh solder and all) not bad considering the board is a great value.

How do you users of the Toft board feel about the lack of balanced monitor outputs? My KRK's have both balanced and un-balanced but I believe most pro monitors take only balanced input. Seems like a bit of a limitation on the board. What are your thoughts?

Toft vs Oram

Played with and heard the Oram and the Toft at AES this year (I know, obviously not the best of circumstances to really be able to hear the boards but still). I really wanted to like the Toft better (the guys at PMI are really cool and very helpful plus their product is available here in the States) but I didn't it. I preferred the Oram on every count (sound, quality of built, looks, feeling, etc.). Plus the Oram meter bridge is great - can't say the same for the Toft one which, judging from the prototype that was there (and having followed the threads on GS) seems like a rushed, ugly product that's being pushed to production to stop people from complaining.

Oh well! I was really trying to decide - I'm in the market for a board - and the Oram just seemed better on all counts. And then I went by the API booth . . .

I guess, you get what you pay for . . .
