Blumlein Rules at Sunset Sound!

So at Sunset Sound studio 2 tonight while tracking drums I used a Blumlein pair of c414EB's into the sunset sound custom pres into a pair of 550a's into a pair of 1176's to PTHD I cant believe I am just now getting into this technique! Really a neat stereo image and depth..very cool. WE tracked 9 songs with a 4 piece metal band called Ascension...
Came out silly good. Get this.. we used 42 inputs to PTHD during tracking!! Good times at Sunset...

SO I'd like to thank gearzlutz for getting me up on this technique!

I'd like to see the track sheet on that 42 input session. I'm guessing given the location with their room and gear list, you just went crazy and put multiple mics on everything. I don't know many metal guys that actually record live, er, live as a band. Overdubs rule for this style.

THat was our point..most modern metal records are LAME..they have no BAND feel.it's a bunch of grid edited sound replaced garbage in my words.

these guys can cut this way because they are that good. THey are like average age of 21 yrs old. But they shred! ..they play live to a pro tools rig sending the drummer a click..so in the studio we just cut to there live PT session..and did three takes of every song including one hand take on the drummers end for ease of any editing needed..but honestly very little editing will be needed...all the amps were in isos and the band was all in the main tracking room at sunset studio 2. Worked like a charm..this would not work for just ANY metal band. THese guys are going places..hence why we are making a record at sunset sound.

Hi superburtm!

What did you achieve sonically with 3 snare mics?

And were the 2 top mics close together or was the KM on the shell?

Also did you spend much time positioning the Blumleins for room vs kit balance --- were they room mics or overheads?

Cheers

3 sn mics worked like this: 57 crack, km84 body and the 441 on bottom for the sizzle.

the 57 and km84 were taped together.

I used the blumleins for room..I did not have a whole lot of time..as I had a huge setup and 9 songs to cut..I just kinda eyeballed it.

I totally forgot about this post but I'm using Blumlein in my room lately and I really really love it. I use Royers 121 with it but I'll try other mics soon

Wow, Is that 4 inputs, just for the Kickdrum??

Seems overkill to me, but what do i know?

If it sounds good; more power to you.

Also really interested in trying Blumein technique
