Reviving this old thread...
I just made a quick vocal recording with a stock u87ai and a modded one (won´t tell what type of change it is yet). If anyone is interested I can post the files. Personally I vastly prefer the sound of the modded u87ai in this case, it kind of leaves the good of Neumann (the colored midrange) intact but gets rid of the "bad" which to me is the smeared and dull highs of the stock models.

Anyone else did comparisons like this? Would be fantastic to gather some u87 mod comparisons with audio examples in one thread.

Rock!
Pat

EDIT: here are the files, same take recording of spoken voice, soft singing, loud singing 24bit 44,1kHz wav, no pad or lowcut engaged

Gotta ask the obvious ...

Isn't the cost of a u87ai + IT mod over 4 k ??

Why doesn't Neumann just build the equivalent of the innertube modded 87 ?

Just seems to me that IF this approach DRASTICALLY improved the 87ai ... then logic says they'd do it ...

I am missing something here ?

Audio sample

I know it's not an A/B comparison, but if you want to hear a sample check out the band Fudge on the link below. FYI - it's a jingle contest for a local furniture dealer, so feel free to vote for us to support a fellow slut trying to earn some cheese !

My wife is singing and she isn't a trained singer, but at least you can get an idea about the clarity and open top end it has. I used it on the acoustics as well.

Jingle Contest : American Furniture Warehouse, Colorado's Largest Furniture Store!

Thanks,
Mark
