Vinyl mastering

Hi, i hope someone of can help me.

I try hard to find information's about vinyl mastering but I didn’t found any.

How much dB Compression do you suggest

I remember that I read that in the past where there but whole LP´s on vinyl they cut anything at 60Hz. What do you think about hi & low cut for vinyl mastering ?

Thanx for share your experience

Hi,

we are doing vinyl mastering for more than 10 years in germany.
There is much more know how than filters.
You don't usually cut basses and highs.
There are some no no's in vinyl, like phase on bass and excessive highs.
There are also some tools like cutting current limiters... but an experienced cutter doesn't work with that and try to stay away from that.

There are also many experiments in regards of half speed technique, different preview path tools,...

I`m unfortunatly only partly involved in the vinyl thing, but you could PM me and I could get you in touch with our vinyl guys (as they don't attend gearslutz as I do).

The standard answer is to just make it sound like you would like it to sound. Leave the rest up to the engineer. Just about all of the no no's can be taken care of by the engineer if need be. Don't worry too much.

If you want an extreemly loud 12" single you have to keep the high end under control because the cutterhead will draw too much current and explode otherwise. The practical result is that the high frequency limiters will clamp down and you will lose it anyway. The low end is usually no problem because the pitch (groove spacing) is wide open anyway.

If you want a very long LP side then you can save space by cutting low end. I would suggest leaving this up to the engineer. There is no way to guess what might need to be done. I do my best to do faithful transfers. I only change things when absolutely necessary. The high end usually isn't a problem on long sides.

Don't try to second guess what the cutting engineer will need. I do a lot of cutting. When I master a 12" single I feed it through the lathe electronics and do test cuts to see how it will behave. Sometimes I even guess wrong
