mixing reccomendations

I will be tracking and mixing a punk/ska band in a week at a studio with 24 track Studer and 48 ch. SSL g series desk.(Vox, guitar, bass and drums) Outboard includes an LA-2a, a few LA-4, two 1176, manley pultec style EQs and the normal assortment of Lexicon and TC TBPs. Just wondering if anyone has any sure-fire suggestions as to which instruments would sound great with certain outboard compressors. Also is there any combinations that just normally sucks? I have always used lower-end stuff and have limited time to mix in the NICE studio, so gimme some suggestions. I have heard that Bass and vox sound good through the LA-2a but only have one unit avail....

Yummy.....

Is this studio here in the valley?

Are you tracking everything at once or will you be doing overdubs?

Do you need an assistant?

valley of AZ

Its at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (Tempe), and I would love an assistant but I think it is against policy. This is my final project. Lemme double check on that though...I will set them up so that if they get it right, we will just do vocal overdubs, but most likely we will overdub alot. U know how it goes...

I don't think they'd let me in there...I went to Full Sail...ha

I didn't know you were in school. That's cool.

As for what you should use compressor wise it's really hard to say without hearing the music and playing style.

I can say I'd use the API pre's on the drums and the Neve's on the bass mic's (if used) and the guitars. Also on the vocals try either the API or Neve's and see what sounds better.

There's a verb in the M-5000 that's called "small wood room". It sounds F'n amazing on a lot of things....might be a great snare verb.

Wish I could help more..

Default I'd say use the LA-2A on bass........1176's on Room mic's for the drums, LA-4A's on guitars and possibly vocals. Vari-mu is also a good vocal compressor.

Full sail eh? Lotsa people at CRAS have some sort of problem with that school. I say whatever dude. They just don't let non-students in for mix sessions unfortunately. However it would be too cool if I could have an assistant, because half the equipment isn't working at any point in time and an extra hand speeds things up. That's one thing i will say about CRAS- excellent program and staff, but horrid upkeep on their equipment. They claim it creates a more real-world experience, I say it's laziness and cheapness on their part. Anyways thanx for the advice I will certainly use the LA-2a on bass and will try that preset u mentioned for reverb. Last time I used a preset called "coffee shop" or something and it was killer, I wonder if it is similiar to your recommendation. I will post some samples of the mix when i finish.
