API 3124+ Gain knobs

Only wanted to know if it is normal that the gain knobs at the API 3124+ are kind of tipsy/unfirm. When i take a look at other API units like the API Channelstrip or API 2500 compressor the typical API knobs seem more constant/ firm in handling and manufacturing. Is it normal for all API 3124+ units that the gain knobs feel worn out or do i have gotten a strange unit? Only interesting to know.

Not sure exactly what you're feeling but mine are all solid. Twisting them has a nice firm feel and very little movement if you "shake" them.

I've used quite a few of these units... some have "tighter" knobs (greater rotational resistance) than others. Some are quite "loose" (little to no resistance). It's not a problem of course... just make sure not to touch the knobs after you've set your levels. Overall, API build quality is excellent... I've put a lot of hours on lots of assorted API gear and never had one single issue. Can't say that for much of the other stuff I've used.

OK thats what i wanted to know! Seems that i got the API 3124+ version with "loose" (little to no resistance) knobs. No problem to set the gain levels.

I only had in mind that the knobs will be getting more "loose" in the future because i got the unit brand new and the unit had this issue from the beginning. But good to hear from 666666 that he had no issues concerning API gear so far.

These knobs should not become "more loose" in the future... will stay the same. After all, they barely get any real "use". An occasionaly level adjustment amounts to essentially zero mechanical wear. A few of the 3124+ units I had used were brand new out of the box and they had "loose" low-resistance knobs... and some had higher-resistance knobs... and they all ultimately functioned the same and worked / sounded fine. No worries.

I have the same issue with my API, doesn't affect the quality on the sound. It did seem a little odd after spending almost $3000 on these pres, but they sound great so i'm happy.
