Phoenix DRS-1 and Great River NV1?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone owns both and could give me a general overview of the differences/peculiarities.
I find it difficult to make up my mind since I haven't heard either one and based my selections on suggestions and documenting myself.

thanks in advance,

pitchy.

You should at least go to www.thelisteningsessions.com as a start. Perhaps that will at least help give you a start.

i have both (actually i just traded my phoenix to a fellow gearslut), and both are great, just different textures. the phoenix seems a tad more open on the top to me and the great river more thick and solid. again, both are great... the great river is usually my first pick on kik drum and i generally reach for the phoenix first for vocals. i like both on electric guitars (they work together very nicely). chances are you wont go wrong with either.... and you'll end up with the other one later anyway :-)
good luck

I have them both. The Phoenix is my first goto for vocals and acoustic instruments. It tames harsh mics and puts a nice beauty spin on source material without making you feel like you're coloring it up too much. Natural, round and woody sounding--never glassy, never cold, never strident. It's a little bit thick, yet translates detail well. I reach for the GR for electric guitar mics or direct Wurlitzer. You can crank in more bite, but it's still smooth enough to play nicely with others. To me the Phoenix is useful on more things, but other people will say that about the GR. In general I find myself adding hi eq more often to the Phoenix than the GR, but often find myself switching from the GR to the Phoenix because it's edgier than what I want.

In general, once I got the Phoenix, I stopped obsessing about preamps. After that, the GR was a nice addition. You'll do very well with either one.

And don't forget the John Hardys.

BTW, I assume you know Fletcher can set you up with all of these, no obligation.

I`ve got the MP2 - Nv and it`s fantastic. That doesn`t answer your question worth a damn but at least you know both are really good.

You should ask Nathan or Fletcher about them as I think both of them carry both products and could tell you a lot about the way the pieces sound.
