SSL X Rack - Rack

Hi all,

This is a question for Jim really, but if any one has any thoughts, please feel free to jump in.

I am just thinking about getting myself an x rack, and deciding on what units i really need to start with, summing, eq etc and i got to thinking about the actual rack.

I have the feeling its not gonna take me long to decide on enough to totally fill a rack with 8 pieces.

Now, my question is, are there any plans to design/build a rack, which can only work as your second rack, which takes its power and Total recall from your main first rack, at a reduced price. So you are kind of buying a mother rack to start. Its just, one thing thats kind of putting me off a little, is i would later down the line like to expand on my first rack, but i really dont want to have to fork out another £850, for just another rack, when i could be buying what i actually want to buy, and thats more gear!!

If there is not, i think this may be a good idea. It cant be that hard to do can it?

thanks

The Total Recall system does more than just recall/store your settings. Plus the X-Rack modules must exist inside an X-Rack chassis. This is by design. Some of the other functions that the computer performs are copy/past between modules and the management of those modules (for example, the computer is smart enough to know that you can't copy between a dynamics and eq module because they aren't the same type of module).

You can certainly link multiple X-Rack together and if you are thinking of the 4 or 8 input modules you only need a single master bus module even if you expand beyond a single X-Rack (i.e. you can populate the 2nd X-Rack full of 4-input modules for an additional 32 channels of mixing, etc.).

Yeah, i suppose all i was really thinking is, its a shame that you have to pay for the expensive TR rack system twice, or three times or however many racks you go on to buy.

I totally understand that the modules must go into a SSL rack, and i am more than happy to buy a second rack. Its just a shame that second rack couldnt be at a reduced price, to encourage expansion. with the first more expensive rack, being the one that controls the TR and power.

Also, to stop people just buying the TR less rack, you would have to have your first rack with it, for it to work, then link the TR and power.

Hope this makes sense, just an idea really.

cheers

Firstly, while the PSU in the X-Rack is big enough to power 8 modules it certainly isn't enough to power 16.

Secondly, the TR is communicated through the internal Bus board, and we do not have a socket to connect two together.

Nice idea, but we won't be able to implement this "X-Rack extension" in this format.
