Thread Starter | Indispensable dynamics? Start w/ RE20, 421, SM7
What dynamic mics do you find absolutely indispensable. Also, include any mic/(instrument or pre or comp) you particularly jive with... I'll start... RE20 - LOVE it on the kick....also, bass amps SM7 - Lots of things, especially bottom of snare and male vox 421 - toms, of course, and guitar amps SM57 - the kitchen sink Others...??

E609. Easy to place, a little smoother than a 57, also great on toms.

I've been living without an RE-20 for years... never missed it. Same with the D12E and the D-112... never cared for them [especially the D-112!!]. The EV 664 and 666 are pretty serious mics [just ask "Tailgunner Joe" or Bobby Kennedy]... though I don't have any at the moment... I definitely wouldn't mind having some Beyer "201"s if I fell across them for a good price.

i don't see what the big deal is, i've mic'd the kitchen sink several times. i'm not proud of it, but it's helped me out of many a jam.

| MD 441 and 431
The best dynamic I have used by far is the Senn MD 441 on everything except voice where they have a tendency to pop which makes its brother the 431 an indispensible companion. Also a big fan of EV RE15 (unfortunately no longer made) and RE 16 never sounds bad on anything except deep bass anything. In the old days, the AKG 224E, dual diaphragm design sounded great but were a bit on the fragile side. And then of course, there are the ribbons ... Baithak |

| I do. I set up the drum kit in the kitchen and put a mic (m300) facing down into the garbage disposal in a stainless steel sink then ran that through the H3000 crystal echoes patch for some wicked processing and blended in the background with alternating panning hard left and right in time with the kick... and here's the best part; I had my assistant turn on the garbage disposal in time with every crash cymbal hit. wow. Now back to the topic: I love my Beta58

Hey Baithak... Just a long shot, but... were you at AES New York this year? I think we may have met there at the Seinheisser booth, you had described to me EXACTLY what you wrote above as we were checking out the 441. You told me that you had a huge inventory of 441s. Was that you? If so, good to see you at the forum! Thanks for the info / comments regarding the Seinheissers. I plan to pick up a few 441s next month... look forward to trying them out. ![]() Quote:

| Heil PR20
I just yesterday tried out the Heil PR20, courtesy of Richard at TransAudio group (sales@transaudiogroup.com) which is designed to be a smooth live vocal mic. Holy Cr*p, I love this mic! I used it on a snare, really nice, it has a very smooth bottom end that keeps it from sounding thin. On vox this mic sounds amazing, I have to say with the right pre and eq, it is in the ball park of some nice condensers I have. Can't wait to try it on a guitar cab (later today) I also tried out the PR30 and 40, both really interesting mics but the 20 impressed me the most in the instant gratification dept. More experimenting today. Street price aprox. $150 according to the Heil website. Check them out. ps. I don't recommend these mics for the kitchen sink however; it takes a very sensitive mic indeed to capture the subtle nuances and sonic challenges that the KS presents to the recording engineer ![]() pps. do you guys prefer the sound of the sink empy or full of soaking dirty dishes?
