AD/DA Converter Upgrade?

I'm ready to upgrade my system as far as conversion goes.

Right now I'm using a RME Fireface 800, but I really only need 8 In / 2 Out and no pre's.

Would either of these be a worthwhile step up?
1.) Apogee Rosetta 800
2) Lynx Aurora 8

OR should I wait until I can make a huge jump to Mytek / Weiss / Prism / Lavry?

Converter Choices

Either converter would be an enormous step up from the RME Fireface,

Depending on what type of music you are doing, I would say that both units would yield much higher quality results overall.

I would wait. We had a Rosetta 200 and upgraded to a Prism ADA-8XR

The difference was quite staggering.

The Prism has virtually zero coloration, and just sounds a more detailed and pure, especially in the high frequencies.

I'll second the advice to wait until you can jump into serious high end...but poke around in the for sale section here for deals. I got a Mytek for a pretty good price, and you might be able to get what you're looking for in your price range.

Yup, someone in New Zealand is selling Mytek 8x96 a/d and d/a for reasonable (to me) money.

either the Rosetta 800 or Lynx Aurora 8 are great

my advice, choose Rosetta 800.

i'm not a fan of the high end on apogee's, it sounds hypey and zingy to my ears. i'd go for something that's either totally neutral, or something with a more euphonic coloration.

I can't imagine wanting anything other than the Aurora. I prefer it to the rosetta, as it seems more detailed to me anyway.

At economik.com you can get an Aurora WITH the firwire option for ten dollars more than the price of the STOCK Rosetta 800. I'm sure that price difference varies from store to store- but it still is an equal price ie: Aurora 8 channel firewire interface=Rosetta 800 without option card.

My vote is for the Lynx.

I'm also looking into buying some much needed convertors (upgrade from my old Delta 1010's). Everyone has their own opinion on your upgrade options. It's only when someone can let you A/B two units on music that YOU often record that you'll be able to trust something or someone. It suuuucks haha. Especially when there isn't a store or studio around that has anything even close to that kind of hi-end gear.

The Lynx is great and its price performance ration is unmatched... I like the Sound of apogee but depending on what your application is you could end up with a bit too much of this pretty quickly... I ended up going with the Mytek... really love it and peferred it over the Lavry blue...

All of these will give you a material improvement over the fireface...

Prism and Lavry gold is a BIG $ leap... haven't heard ANYONE says something bad about Prism and the gold is very very good... but especially at doing its mastering trick where you drive it like crazy... There is no way that I can justify for myself the leap to the gold versus the mytek for my application.

depends on what style of music you're making.
i'm not an apogee fan, but they're built for that style.
i've heard jazz done on apogee boxes and it sounds ridiculous to me.
i'm a mytek fan - i think it's bang vs. buck is as good or not better than lynx.

Maybe to big jump to you at this point, just wanna make shure you aware of theese (since you didnt mention them in your post, and no one else in this thread either) Digital Audio Denmark AD and DA Converters.

I own and use them and think they are one of the best converter out there IMVHO.

They dfegad on apogee and 192´s and deff are in the same league as the expensive one´s everybody mentioned here.

i'm mainly recording rock based music w/ variations in metal, hardcore, and sometimes even contemporary soft rock tunes.

i definitely dont want a converter that is gonna hype or zing my high ends so is that what you guys are saying about the apogee's?

mytek and lynx look like the best upgrade right now.

If i get into the toft atb console in early 2008 like i'm planning, i'm now going to want more i/o like 24 versus when i first started this thread

my friend just got the SSL alpha converter and he loves it. it's got 24 i/o so that's def. in the running now too
